Memorising fuel use Gauges etc

Just changes the Johno 2S 115 to a ETEC 115.

Now I use to be up with technology etc when I organised Rally Oz, but times a changing.

I have a wee little problem with the new gauges on the boat, and dont want to bother the marine guys up here to much if there is a simple fix.

I have a memory stick that plugs in series at the back of the dash, this setup I havent seen before, and if it is confusing I will get a pic when at home.

Compared with the old Johno the data is fantastic with fuel flow, oil level etc. The problem I have is when we stop to fish it looses its memory. But Not all the time.

Anyone got any ideas as to why. I do run a twin battery setup, and I have had the boat about 2.5 yrs, and prior to that it had 98hrs on the clock (with the Johno). Could it be that the batteries are just getting old.

Safety first and if I thought that was the case I would change them in a flash.

I know it sounds confusing, but thats just my untechno mind speaking.

What purpose does the memory

What purpose does the memory stick serve? And when you stop to fish what memory is lost - Fuel/oil consumption for that trip I assume? 2.5 years would be getting close to used by depending on the battery type/breed, but you wouldnt be able to start the motor if the batteries were that rooted to lose the data from the trip...?

Thats whats lost. I am pretty conservative and never have less than 1/3 tank left on return, plus 20l Jerry full as an emergency. Previously with just a Empty - Full gauge it certainly wasnt as good as fuel flow. The data about how much has been used is lost every now and then. I still know roughly in my memory how much I have used, but I wouldnt want that to become a issue with the more adventurous trips to the deep blue. I obviously still have fuel flow that I can use as a calculation in my mind.

Might be easier to go home, get a snap off the setup and post it again or on this thread.

As for the batteries, cranking the engine to start has always had a display saying low voltage on the Plotter, but this never shows at rest before starting up, or at rest fishing, its only when you start the engine. With the Johno it was a typical cold start 2S, and needed a few energy saping cranks. The Etecs like a car, turn the key and she is off and ready to race.

Could be something as simple

Tue, 2011-08-09 17:06

Could be something as simple as an earth wire loose, we had that prob with ours (Suzuki)and it wouldnt tell us fuel tank level.

I`d check all conections and then if its still doing it back to the pros to get them to look at it, be under warranty wouldnt it ?

 those little i-command

those little i-command guages are tricky little suckers, i'd have a play with the settings and see if you can make it hold it's data, i don't think mine had that function somehow.

Etec are particularly cranky

Etec are particularly cranky when it comes to power. I would definately make sure batteries and all connections are in excellent condition. I'm guessing its dropping power to the guages when cranking over.

Losing power shouldnt result

Tue, 2011-08-09 19:48

Losing power shouldnt result in the loss of data (usually?). Anyway, EPROM, EEPROM, ETEC, NMEA whatever, should have bought a Yammy! But seriously, take it back out to Darren and he'll sort it for you. The riddle is simple when you know the answer.

Poor Macka (Darren)is so flooded at the moment

Wed, 2011-08-10 08:24

I thought I would try and fix it myself, as mentioned not a dangerous situation currently because havent tested the fuel capacity to anywhere near max. But might want to venture out to the platforms now I have the range. The Johno was "crap" but I suspect its not specifically Johnson, just 2S.

Might move the port to another area and see what happens. Then if that fail will stress the stressed one. Poor bugger needs a hand up here. Highest boat ownership per head of population in Australia when last I looked, with one designated Marine Repairer. Others tinkle on the edge, but he currently is the only pure marine Mech. Matt Dyson's sort of does a bit, but not him personally, which even Darren will say is a loss.
