Merry Christmas to fellow F/W members
To all my fellow F/W members I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a most happy and prosperous new year.
Please take care when traveling over this most joyous of holidays and keep safe, be your travel by boat, ship, train plane or car, remember there are fools out there who can take your life or that of a loved one in a blink of an eye.
To those members who are venturing down to my neck of the woods (Mandurah) I hope that you catch a good feed of the local crabs and enjoy the fishing that is available. Having a try at the local artificial reef has the potential to turn up quite a bit of a surprise for you.
I'm sorry to end this Christmas wish with a bit of advise, however what I witnessed at my local free launching ramp demands telling here.
How not to get help from the locals.
First event 0630, forty knot Freddy I'll call him with 3 of his crusty crew approaches the ramp at what looked like 40 knots plus in his super butte 5m plate boat. Ramp approach from estuary is restricted to 5 knots. Anyway 2 metres from the ramp Freddy throws his 150 hp power train into reverse and creates a massive wave that just about sinks a 12ft tinnie at the launching jetty.
Freddy then in a loud abrasive voice announces to all within 100 metres that the crabs are that thick he caught his boat limit of forty before he and his crew had time to finish their slab of VB and how great it is to holiday in this place.
Case number 2.
Braggart Bob I'll call this bloke arrives at the ramp to launch his magnificent 8m + floating gin palace that had a fore deck that would put the USS Ronald Regan (CVN76) to shame.
Just how he planned to fish or crab of such a boat is beyond me however. One of the locals walks up to Bob and trys to explain to him that the ramp might prevent his launching of his vessel due to its shallow ramp angle. Expletive loaded response from Bob " you locals try and rip us visitors off at every chance you get don't you, I'm not going to pay your outrageous fees to launch my boat again loaded with profanity. Bob trys to launch boat, boat becomes stuck on trainer as stern is wedged into bottom of estuary. Great amount of profanity directed at all and sundry for having such bloody awful launching facilities. Boat stuck on trailer, and can't be off loaded, 2 wheal drive Lexus, can't pull trailer and boat out of water ramp is covered with weed, oow dear what are we going to do. Hey all you locals give me a hand to get my car and boat out.
When I left he was shouting what a bunch of unfriendly people from Mandurah are, with expletives.
Have a great holiday good friends and remember your ramp etiquette.

You can get a feed there
When we go out we only catch enough to have for the meal that night, usually 6 which if they are good size feeds the both of us well. The crabs are now full of great meat and are just starting to fill out their shell.
You should do well and be able to be selective in the ones to keep, be aware you may find a couple that have that "poppy" feel about the shell which tells you they haven't filled with meat yet, slip them back to fill up there is no shortage and you can be fussy.

Merry Xmas
And Merry Xmas to all also, from out on the sloppy seas 100 mile NW of Exmouth.
I guess generally in the MIdwest we are lucky with good town ramps and fairly smooth launch/retrieves.
Certainly not immune though, from lunacy

Spent an hour sorting out the boat next door
Holiday home, I've known them for a long time, his wife came over asking about outboard mechanics. Severe loss of power on a 2 stroke 40hp mariner, struggled to get home from up the river against the southerly. Quick eyeball of the tote tank revealed water in the bottom, hoovered a cupful out with a siphon hose, cleaned the filter, drained the carbs, cleaned the plugs, fresh fuel, all good. Old 2 strokes are easy to work on.
My Boxing Day good deed done, now all we need is this bloody swell to drop off so we can get out to pull the pots tomorrow.
A belated Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Exciting times ahead
I have got to get out and pull my pots, I haven't lifted them for 2 days and as the are in quite close I could be in for an exciting time trying to get to them. You may also be in for some excitement (read scary trying to get out of the cut) tomorrow if the sea is up be careful if close in along side the southern break water of the cut. I actually saw a wave break three quarters of the way across the cut mouth a week back.
