Metro Salmon

Just a heads up, went to Trigg point this morning and fished from 11am to 12.30 and caught and release 4 salmon all around the 2kg mark, And hooked one hooter which I think was a tailor but jumped and threw the hooks.

No pics unfortunately as it was a solo mission.

Added: all the fish came from one area, and if you cast just out of the spot you get zilch.

Nice work Dean

It is interesting that there have been a few salmon caught in the metro area over the past few months.
Hopefully it is a sign that this metro salmon season will be a lot better than the last.

Tue, 2008-12-16 21:45

Good session Dean. There's been plenty of salmon trout in the 1-2kg in the last 3 months along our coastline, just waiting for the bigger ones to grace us.....roll on Febuary!

Salmon for Craybait

Wed, 2008-12-17 07:38

If you are going to use salmon for bait do not put it in fresh, all you will catch is wobbies or doggies[port jacksons].Freeze it first and problem solved

didnt know this!!! we head

Wed, 2008-12-17 09:13

didnt know this!!!

we head to hamelin bay every year during the salmon run, and put our cray pots out awell. Not only do we get BIG crays, but plenty of wobbys.

Not fun getting them out of a cray pot that doesnt have any removable sides!!

This year we had atleast 10 i would say in cray pots over a 2 week period..

Pain int he ass they are!!!

But now i know, dont put fresh salmon into cray pots!!! as thats the only bait we use!

Im still using salmon for cray bait now :) Man i had so many heads in the freezer from the salmon run in April.

Yeh Bodie the invaders love fresh salmon and the crays prefer smelly (older/once frozen) stuff so yeh!

Might just be the trick

Wed, 2008-12-17 19:19

Cool, Shawn has just bought got that G Loomis 2 - 4kg spin stick & Twin Power 1000 he wants to see bend in, might just be the trick.

I have wanted to have a look around carnac & 5 Fathom bank for a while, they I am guessing is where I might best go hunting. I may have to call in & stock up on plastic's though, I have not used them since leaving the Pilbra.

The whole Barra fishing thing I miss, getting the fro net out catching Mullet, then on to the chase looking for good snags and rock bars to fish, It was the complete package, Fishing down south here has not been as rewarding, but Ideas like this makes for good fun In my books, Hunting Salmon to fill the cray pots, What a great mission.

Cheers

Justin

Yeh!

Wed, 2008-12-17 19:28

Boat wise the best spot is Woodmans Point (Wapet Groyne). Drift with small metal slices to locate fish then use SP on em. The Ammo jetty in Owens Anchorage near that spot is good also.....plenty of options etc

Pop in mate if your down this way, we've got plenty of goods to throw at em and we'll also organise a day out on the UB with Shabba and we'll get some bottom fish.....plenty out there and your FCV 585 will help target them!

Catcha :)

Wed, 2008-12-17 19:34

I use snelled hooks(taiwana on the bottom and normaly 5/0 octopus hook on the top), but gangs would be fine aswell.

Unweighted baits as there is lots of reef around that area, and a slow retrieve.

they were only in a certain spot and if I missed it by a few meters got zilch.

Plenty of room in my freezer

Wed, 2008-12-17 19:33

Plenty of room in my freezer Ryan, But I will soon master the Furuno 585 and have plenty food.

Like your article says less time fishing more tweeking, till I learn how to fly the thing, the main thing for me at the moment is diferentiating the species, and only by droping a line & time on the water will i learn it.

cheers

I am surprised that the

I am surprised that the salmon hang around Perth at this time of the year. I always thought that they went south for the summer months. I suppose you can learn something every day.

Looking forward to Autumn when the salmon are around in numbers. Had a couple of great days earlier this year off Mindarie. Huge schools of big salmon that were just great fun to catch.

IMO it is an injustice to a great sportfish like salmon that so mnay of them end up with a net being run around them and then sold off for cat food or cray bait. I seem to remember seeing a figure somewhere that the pros get something like $1 per kilo, maybe less, for these fish. Surely if a fish is worth so little on the commercial market we would be better off buying out the liceneses and exploiting the sportfishing potential that salmon offer.

Cheers Steve

Can't say I have ever seen

Wed, 2008-12-17 08:23

Can't say I have ever seen Sambo for sale, who would be buying it? Maybe people that make up fish cakes etc for resale as frozen goods?

The WA Sambo sports fishery is becoming well known in many parts of the world and I am sure that the sportfishing tourist $ would outweight any commercial value. I reckon that the salmon could fall into the same category. They are a great light tackle sportfish that can be targeted from both shore and boat, probably the closest thing we have in the southwest to compete with the fishing on offer up north.

in the 50's and 60's ate Albany Salmon either cold out of the can with salad or as fish cakes. Cheap feed and it made great fish cakes.

Enjoyed the Salmon patties

Wed, 2008-12-17 09:11

Enjoyed the Salmon patties myself Ian.

Dont want to make a big thing out of it, so I suppose if the fishery is well managed and the pros are happy with a couple of bucks a kilo then so be it. In the end that is the commercial reality of it, the kilos in the net are a tangible return, whereas the $ spent on the "sport" side of the argument are a little harder to quantify.

Sambos and Salmon are still bloody good fun to catch but.

if Salmon fillets are cut

Wed, 2008-12-17 10:18

if Salmon fillets are cut thinly, and cooked quickly they are dam tasty.

Put a little cajin seasoning on them, and shallow fry... not bad at all.

Need to be cooked real quick or they dry out.

Patties are always a good chew too!

From memory most of the salmon caught along the WA coast go for cat food and cray bait

I agree Bodie, they are not

Wed, 2008-12-17 10:25

I agree Bodie, they are not too bad on the chew if eaten fresh.

It is a shame that a such a large number of them end up as cat shit.

Pros

Wed, 2008-12-17 15:08

I thought a majority of the salmon licenses had been bought back and there were only a few left? I know the guy at Peaceful Bay still operates, but from what I can gather the salmon pros are now few and far between? I may be wrong though....

And yes ot, there should be a few salmon flaoting around down south.

Where to try

Wed, 2008-12-17 15:27

Walk the length of Bunker Bay,when you get to the first patch of rocks[start of Rocky Point]try soft plastic or chrome slices over the reefy bits.
Its too early for the big up run fish but you should get into some good size salmon trout-2-2 1/2kg,tailor in the evening as well as a feed of herring
