Mixed bag NOR last Friday

Went out on a solo mission of Hillarys last Friday. Initially hung in close just behind the 3 mile waiting for the wind to die down, the highlight was a nice 45cm KG from my KG spot. Also got some skippy, tarwhine, sand whiting, a well undersize dhu which swam away strongly and a few undersize pinkies which seem to be around in plague proportions at the moment.

Once the wind died down headed further out for a jig on lumps north of Rotto. Was a slow day out there. I was plagued by Sergent Bakers and Footballer Sweep - given their size I'm surprised how many of them I get on jig. I did manage my PB flatty though - a 58cm Blue Spot which hit a jig on the fall, a new species for me on jig.

I did some experimenting with rigging jigs with a bottom hook, interestingly most of the Sergent Bakers were hooked on the bottom hook. Late in the day I had a big hit on a 160gm Shout ShabShab but didn't hook up. I didn't have the bottom hook rigged on the jig and I reckon it cost me a good fish.

Overall not a bad day out on the water.

Nice one. I played off

Nice one. I played off Straggelers, Mewstone and Carnac with jiggs, poppers, plugs and bait and ended up with two trumpeters and 6 herring! plenty of things nibbeling but nothing getting angry enough to chew.

hi Wrasse Magnet,

I caught a similar size blue spot flattie west side of Rotto in 20+ metre ground on jig too.

Just like yourself, I was trying to experiment with rear twin assist on the slow pitch jigs. Problem is they often snag on the hook on top of the jig and render the whole thing useless. I can use a shorter assist cord but most slow pitch jigs are short and fat and it is pretty hard tying an assist hook with cord  1-2cm long.

No need for assist cord for

No need for assist cord for the bottom hook IMO. I attached a single rear hook to the jig using a split ring, no problems with tangling. I didn't snag any jigs either which was my main concern. I didn't put it on the ShabShab coz I was afraid of loosing it, instead I lost a potentially good fish....and that is soooooo much worse!

Must have been the fish gods this weekend

Mon, 2014-04-07 12:45

I was testing a new sounder (Furono 627) out yesterday bewteen Garden and Carnac. Showed a smallish fish on the screen so I thought why not, dropped the throttle, drifted back a little with a Pirate jig down and a big flatty nailed it big time. He was a late lunch in a totasted sandwich

Regards

Steve

I agree. Fishwreckapedia rates them only as average eating but personally I really like them.

It's a Western Red

It's a Western Red Scorpionfish, never kept one before but after reading on Fishwrecked about their eating qualities I decided to try it. I removed the spines first, after that it was easy to fillet. And I can confirm they are fantastic on the tooth!

Was very happy with the KG

Was very happy with the KG and flatty, at first I thought it was a bar tail which would have given me an entry on the record board, but wasn't to be!
