Montes in December

Hi guys

So I have spent several years in the pilbara previously and find myself living back here again except this time with a 36ft yacht. Just found out that i have a week or 2 without the missus over christmas and trying to think of reasons why I shouldnt sail over to the montes for a week or 2. I know it will be cyclone season but it would be pretty unlucky to cop one then and from memory you usually get a good few days notice and I could high tail it back to dampier in about 15 hrs even just motoring. Also it looks like plenty of bays where I could set a few anchors etc out if we were caught out by one. I know the heat is shocking but apart from that am I being crazy?

Any advice much appreciated.

You are not being silly thinking about it. Do it.

Even if you get caught in a cyclone there are moorings set up inside the islands just for that purpose so you will be safe but then again with the warnings we get you would have 4-5 days to sail back, more than enough time.

Out of curiosity, what would be the best time of the year to visit?

I like around October/ November before it gets too hot and you don't get the howling easterlies that crank up every time a big high comes in across the bottom half of the state but everyone will have a different opinion.

When I was there , we were fishing professionally and targetting sharks and couldn't or didn't need to come inside the islands to shelter because we had a draft of 4.7 metres and the boat was 24 metres long so we anchored up in around 50 metres of water. Once anchored out would come to light gear for some relaxation.

Thats the good thing about having a yacht, she loves it when its between 20 and 30 knots :-)  I Forgot about the cyclone moorings  there. I would assume they were reserved/owned by commercial fleets but will look into that. Geeze I think I will just have to do it huh!

There are some that were put in by Dept of Transport and are free so first in best dressed.

If you do get caugt out and miss out, I'm sure no other boatie would complain if you hung off the back of their boat rather than try using your own anchors.
