Morning Choppers

I've been getting my share of choppers from the Swan for the last few weeks but this morning they were really turned on. From 2am to 6am I landed 36 choppers, 14 of which were legal with the biggest going 39cm. I finally decided it was time to leave when a decent fish inhaled my hardbody & eventually bit through my 20lb leader. The fish came on various hardbodies about 50mm long, smaller & larger lures were completley ignored but colour didn't seem to matter with clear lures being just as effective as blue, brown & green. I only kept these two just legal ones (31cm & 32cm) to use as bait tonight, the rest were released.

Good stuff mate.

Sounds like the river is going to be really thick with them again this year. Last year was insane. I ended up crushing the barbs on a couple lures. Was a bonus when they'd fall off boatside so you didn't have to unhook them.

Brenz - Landbased mate, havn't put lights on the tinny yet.

Noxious - because I'm usually targeting bream the barbs on all my lures are crushed. Your right, it's always a bonus when a little one gets off as you lift it from the water, not so much when it's a good fish though.

Piggy - These all came from the stretch between the Narrows & RPYC.

Thanks YellowSubmarine, was a furious session alright. Probably a fish every 6 or 7 casts if I had to guess an average.

Scott I'm heading out again tonight for a tailor & mulloway session so I should get a few for you, I'll text you tomorrow arvo to sort a time to catch up.

Thanks Midor.

Asked & answered, landbased mate.

Thanks PT, shame I couldn't repeat the performance last night. From 11pm to 6am I have been throwing everything at them & only managed 6 fish for the whole night with only 2 being legal. Every lure in my box got a run as well as sending out a few mulies. I found them no worries & they would follow my lures but just wouldn't take them. I must have been seriously off my game I think.

Hi mate,Im gonna hit up

Tue, 2012-10-23 08:40

Hi mate,

Im gonna hit up burswood tonight i think, do any of you guys add a little weight before the leader to get your hardplastic lures out that bit further?

Just curious as its done quite alot in England. I have no trouble getting the twistys out but i cant get anywhere near enough distance on the smaller plastics.

Cheers,

Craig

I wouldn't use a weight in

Tue, 2012-10-23 09:28

I wouldn't use a weight in front of a hardbody lure myself, if it's too close to the lure it will kill it's action & if it's too far away it will be a bitch to cast. Apart from that there's simply no need for it. Most hardbodies will cast quiet well if your using the right gear for the job, not as far as a twisty but plenty far enough to get the job done. Break out the ultra light bream gear & choose the right lure for the location you want to fish & you shouldn't have any dramas with casting distance.

ok cool man, ive got super

Tue, 2012-10-23 10:35

ok cool man, ive got super light gear anyway I just use a 2-4kg shimano nexave set up with 15lb braid, i was just curious as I was battling the wind the other day and wasnt getting much luck. I know a fella whos selling off a great selection of lures for a good price as his friends shop went under and a fair few of them are ace lures there just quite small, i suppose in the summer months a little wade into the shallows and a nice cast i should still cover some distance. Any chance of a PM with some decent spots with directions? bear in mind im new to the area and know bloody nowhere !

I'll PM you soon with some

Tue, 2012-10-23 10:46

I'll PM you soon with some tips, the first one is going to be to replace the braid your using, 15lb is too heavy for most river applications. Something in the 2lb-6lb range is what you need for most swan river situations.

 What's the legal size for

Wed, 2012-10-24 18:14

What's the legal size for tailor? Me and the young bloke have been getting a few near the raffles hotel biggest on was 33cm. Don't actually know the size limit though (which is a bit irresponsible of me)
