Most surprise fish catch
I just posted on another post a big surprise when we caught big reds in a drop off ranging from 8-12m. Was a stellar day with 6 reds landed, all in the 8-10kg range. The limit was already reached when we caught the biggest 2 but felt good to release them anyway. Also had 2 trout one 70 and the other 82 in the esky. We were targetting snapper in the spot as we previously named it Snapper City because you were bound to get a feed there. Went back a few times but never saw a red there again. Also the trout and reds came up at dusk which also surprised me, especially the trout as they go to bed at night.
Also caught a Mangrove Jack at 52cm in 60m of water with no land in sight, aswell as a legal Barra at the back of Rosemary Island in 40m. Thought it was a sandbass initially, but common sense soon prevailed.
Down south caught a nice size Skippy in Bassendean chasing Bream. Sailfish hooked not landed near the chicken run off Rotto.
Not to many weird ones for me, but Im sure there is some very unusual captures.

Caught
A giant herring in one of those little canals in between busso and dunsborough about 10 years ago. It started doing areobatic's in about 50cm of water and ended up jumping onto the bank.

Squid on metal jig targeting demersals
Two in the past 12 months.
First south of rotto in 40m so I sent him back down still attached as live squid assist. Second was a couple of weeks ago, got a good dhu type bite but didn't hook up. Pulled up the jig to find a dead squid that looked like it had been regurgitated - so I guess I caught a dhuies lunch?

Shark Mack
I hooked this shark mack just out from the north mole on my trout rod while flicking a small plastic for herring. Had me guessing what it was for a while but after 20+ minutes I finally landed it. Aprox 8kg on 4lb gear.

Hi mate
Classic. Takes the cake so far. Not just unusual but also a great capture.
What was your initial thoughts with the hookup. Must have been something along the lines of WTF is this????

I took my mate
I took my mate out to this spot ( first marker directly north of the north mole ) so he could learn the spot when the weather was average.
I only took one rod and was trying to get him onto a good fish. My intention was just to catch bait for my next beach trip and let him chase bigger stuff.
We set anchor, got him set up and I flicked out the plastic. The plastic was old and a bit melted from the sun, and my braid stuck to the reel first cast, second cast landed only 10m from the boat and 2 turns of the handle the rod just loaded solid.
The fish then took of at speed and I thought it was a Sambo for the first 1o minutes until I saw some colour. I kept thinking Spanish mack but knew that species would have spooled me fast. Another 5min and I finally confirmed it as a sharkie. Considering the 6lb leader and tiny jig head it was a stressful last 8min or so until I finally netted it.
Not my biggest fish but definitely one of the most memorable. Cheers Grant .

Catfish
Used to get heaps of the mongrel things when shark fishing up that way. Anywhere there was soft muddy bottom and you could guarantee to get the barstewards. Even in the deeper water on either side of the Glomar Shoals

Cant remember the exact name, but the ones I caught went like the clappers, and was some good sport. Thought it was something like "somethin" tail Catfish.

Lost a nice combo overboard in the cut. Was pretty pissed off.
2 weeks later the Mrs caught the rod and reel about 400m downstream from where we lost it. Blew me away. Rod survived, little Saragosa was rats despite an overhaul. Now on "display" in my reel collection box in the shed.

But the tide/current moved the combo 400m was what I thought was amazing. Would have been better if it was me, because that SicStix is now claimed by her as her favourite light rod, with a Sustain attached.

On Tuesday out in the sound
On Tuesday out in the sound with a mate we were chasing the salmon. Landed around 6 each then went off to chase some squid and herring for a feed. On the way back to the boat ramp we caught up with the salmon again and decided to have another crack at them. Everyone else were trolling lures around and picking them up but we were chucking lures. We noticed some big splashes in the distance so took of towards the larger splashes.
My mate threw out his Toby metal slice and hooked up immediately then I threw out my 40 gram wobbler and drew a blank. I threw the wobbler out again and hooked up straight away. By now my mate had his fish near the boat and it was then that we realised that his fish wasn't a salmon but a pinkie around 4kgs. I then started to wonder what was on the end of my line. Sure enough after good fight in 2.5mtrs of water I had a pinkie around 5-6kgs in the boat. After another twenty odd casts we only picked up a few more salmon. It topped of a good day out in the dingy.

Shark on a squid jig
Squidding off the jetty at Smokey Bay in South Aus using a mulie on one of those spike type jigs on a hand line.
A shark a bit over a metre came out of nowhere and nailed the jig.
Managed to land it and still have the jig with teeth marks all along the shank.

was fishing with wifey
I was on the pipe line out from dampier , first time fishing with the wife handed her a hand line and put some bait on it while I was ballooning for mackys , think I have something she yells in Thai I say well pull it up and over the side comes a 750cm coral trout , pure luck I told her , re baited for her and went back to watching my balloon baits
wifey says think I have another fish up comes another coral trout the same size as the first , I was not happy ok love I said time to go home these days she regularly out fishes and out squids me the only thing stopping her taking the boat out on her own or with her Thai girl friends is she cant back it down the ramp

Caught a big spotted cod on the harbour side of South Mole when I was a kid. Took it home and fed the family for days. Thinking back, it was probably an Estuary cod.

Mine would have to be back
Mine would have to be back when i was 5-6 down at Albany with the grandparents for a week holiday we went for a picnic lunch around the Denmark area In the bush we had to cross a lil creek we started to set up for lunch and I was getting bored so the grandparents decided to go get the handling out off the car and pinch a bit off chicken skin off the BBQ chicken for lunch and I threw the line out over the bridge waited about 5 mins I was getting bites next min I'm on I shouted out to me pop get the gaff get the gaff next min he comes racing over to see this rainbow trout dangling from me line and he helped me pull it up over the bridge railing left pop to unhook the fish whip I went to grab another bit off skin put it on the hook had another go but to no luck had lunch and went back to trying again and the first fish was no fluke I caught another. Since then I've never caught another trout since and that's now going on 20years ago but will always be my most memorable and got a couple pics to help with those memories
