G'day All
Just after some tips, baits and tricks for the Murchison River, Kalbarri.
Heading up there for the long weekend and was hoping to have a fish off the bank and maybe the kyak, Not sure what species are around this time of year although have heard the river has possibilities of Jack, Bream, small Mulloway and even Mud crabs?
I guess ill take the drop nets as well! So would appreciate any guidence as ive never been past Jurien Bay.
Feel free to PM me
Cheers

there's a lot to offer up
there's a lot to offer up there so ill start from the rivermouth a work my way down:
Rivermouth: cast off either chinamens point or oyster reef (other side of river, need boat/kayak to get you across)
heeps of big tailor here, unwieghted or lightly wieghted mulies casted into the rough water, or stickbaits/poppers, you can get in close and anchor up on the edge, just make sure it's safe to do so as it can be very rough at times, I have done so in a kayak before.
opposite the bat hire (on the north side of the river) is a sandy beach lined with trees, which has a drop off about 3m from the shore, catch bream, trevally, jacks, moses perch, whiting, tailor and if you're lucky a mullet. size of fish here though isnt massive, but if you're there at sunset/night you can cast 20m out some bigger bream can be found (upwards of 30cm).
about 7-8km upstream is a place called castle rock, awesome spot for large bream (heard reports of up to 50cm, we only got them 35 though), had a school of 40cm soapy mulloway come past and provide some god entertainment, and maybe if you're lucky again a giant herring, hooked 3 none landed :(. prefer to use bait around here, mullies worked well for us. Same species as above, didnt manage a whiting here though.
In general we never managed a sized Jack, they were all around 25-28cm but that was a year ago, the floods a while back pushed them all out of the river so i'm told and they've been steadily coming back and growing in size ever since, so you could well get a few sized ones.
Deffinitely mud crabs, had them pinching my baits and even hooked one ahahahaha.

Spiinerak pretty much covered
Spiinerak pretty much covered it. Usually lots of small mullas (like 20-30cm) and bream, with a few larger bream here and there. The river is generally very shallow as u go further upstream, so any deeper areas, drop-offs etc are worth a go, as are snags. If you want to sit on shore (and have 4x4), you can follow a dirt track along the river just out of town a bit and get to some areas of flat rock platforms which are fairly easy to fish from, and theres usually bream around. Haven't tried chinamans much as it was generally packed when i went there but with a kayak might be easier. Be careful tho, fair amount of swell washes through there. If the swell isn't too big then frustrations, the beach just on the other side of the rive mouth, is well worth a go for large tailor and mulloway (as are the other beaches- Wittecarra and Red Bluff etc). Apparently can get whiting near the mouth, just along the stretch in front of town. Good luck, its an awesome place.

Thanks for your comments Spiinerak and Versus
I have a 4x4 so shouldnt be limited in where I can get to. As im there for a few days I will try and cover most of the river and try and find the action. It sounds like the usual Bream, tailor and Mulloway will be there, I was i bit worried I might be out of season. I think ill take some river prawn, mullies and blue bait. I suppose ox splean will do the job for crabs.
Thanks for the info

Just head up river rd and
Just head up river rd and stick to the main track close to the river for quality black bream, jacks and giant herring along the banks in the fourby.
chinamans fishes well at times, put an effort in there after dark when everyone else bails out and you can be rewarded with good tailor, mulloway and sharks.
goodluck
