Navionics app

Does anyone use the navionics app? If so what's your experience been like? Is this a viable alternative to a gps unit? What does a plotter do that the app on an iPad can't? Looking at this as an alternative to a combo unit.

Navionics App
i have the navionics app HD version on an older iPad 2 (it must be a 3G model for the app to work)
it is great and waypoints and routes and tracks very easy to play with.
as you would expect from Navionics the charts are great.
its a bit power hungry and if you want to use it for more than about 4 hours you will need a power supply.
For the $84 for the app it was a much easier decision than buying a stand alone plotter
Good luck.

I use it some times on a Galaxy Tab S on a large suction cup mount on my Dash.
It is easy to use and the maps are the same as my Navionics on the Plotter. However as stated it is power hungry and even when powered by cable while in use the battery still drains. It is also a problem in less than perfect conditions keeping the Galaxy dry and I have stopped using it mostly now due to the lack of waterproofing. This is with all the clear on including the front wind screen clears.
What you are paying for with a plotter is a marine grade device that can handle getting wet...
Marine trimmer NOR (available for clears, tops, carpet, upholstery, custom equipment covers)

A lot of people seem to try this...
...and end up getting a proper plotter. General comments relate to lack of waterproofing, and general difficulty in handling. You need it in something which will keep it firmly in place , and facing you, in all conditions, pretty useless just having it sitting loose on the dash, especially if the weather is less than perfect. Plenty of RAM mounts out there that can do that for you. I guess if you've got some battered crappy old iPad that you don't really care about, give it a go. Nothing wrong with the app, per se.

I used that setup in my tinny iPad in a life proof case with a ram mount bracket it kept it fixed
in place, just need a rag to wipe the water off, it never bothered the iPad in the life proof case.
Few problems with the app is the ongoing cost of renewal $45 a year which you don't need to do
but if you don't renew you lose a lot of handy features, satellite overlay handy for finding sand holes on
overcast days and many other features. The app only holds 200 markers which is really annoying,
the only thing I use it for these days is scouting ground on the couch the night before
