Navionics on a mobile or tablet
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2017-12-10 16:18
Hey all. just wondering if anyone has had experience with navionics on a mobile or tablet. looking at downloading one but not to sure if it would be viable. reason for it is so we can save our spots manually inputing each time we find new ground. and plan out our day without having to get up on the boat along with being able to see all the contours and depths in the areas. i only have a navman 510 (i think thats the model) thats nearly 20yo. still works but a bit out of date.also have a hummingbird 917c combo unit to work with thats about 15yo.
any info would be appreciated , thanks Russ and Sandy

Try the 15 day free trial
I have an iPhone 5 and am very surprised at the detail on map. Accuracy seems OK for crays, so probably ok for drift fishing.
im guessing it’s only good for near shore work, as phone would likely drop out at the 19mile.

as long as you download the map area you want you don`t need phone reception, i use it on a samsung
tablet that doesn`t have a phone connection and it works great. just wifi connect at home to do any updates.

Not really
No giant "mark" button!
The map will follow your position with the boat in the centre of the screen. You take hold of that screen and a crosshair appears. From that crosshair you can hit a button that gives you a few options locked to that coordinate of the crosshair, one of which is to create a mark. That then gives you and option to name that mark and you can either chose to add and the fixed coordinates for the crosshair with one button or add at current GPS position...
Reading that back, it sounds as clears as mud!
It’s not as simple as a plotter with a mark button, no! But I still use it pretty regularly especially to check out detailed contour lines! I think it’s nice to have a backup also should the main unit fail. I only have the Iphone version (way cheaper than the IPad)

Yeah it's pretty clunky but
Yeah it's pretty clunky but it did save me one day when the GPS on my main unit died. No way I'd use it as a primary plotter.

I use it on a 10 in
I use it on a 10 in Samsung.
I love it, no phone reception required.
Total cost was about $300 with second hand tablet and the application cost.
Limitations are way point marking is a process, sun on the screen and the battery life. Although this can be overcome with a car charger.
I also like it because I could take it between both my boats, and still have my tracks and marks saved. I have now had the tablet through 4 different boats, and still have all the old data.
I also have a mounted 7in unit, but that operates more as the backup now.

I’ve actually dug out my phone when flying and held it up against the window to get a satellite to see where we are and how fast we’re going. Just renewed my subscription, only cost $13.
