Needing help with fishing out of Mindarie
Submitted by Familyofharris on Mon, 2015-04-20 21:03
hi everybody, I recently brought a boat and have been taking my son out for some offshore fishing. Living in Merriwa it's easy to drop the boat in at Mindarie and head out.. We have been out behind the 3nm outer reefs and steggies about 4 times now and have come home without catching anything?? We both have boat rods and I make up paternosca rigs which I copied from the charters we have been on previously and bait wise I have gone through plenty of different colours, sizes and styles of soft plastics .. Am I fishing in the wrong spots ? Is it my rigs or bait choice ?? Any advice would be very appreciated... Thanks

Your sounder is your best freind. Fish the back side of the 3 mile. Dont use paternosters - if you are fishing baits, have a snell of hooks and a medium size running sinker. full size squid or yakka/herring on and hey presto - you have the best shallow water rig. you can feel the bottom, none of this heavy sinker crashing around. sound around the back of the reef and wait till you see flare ups and have a drop. trial and error is the best way about it. Some of the best fishing in perth is along that stretch in my opinion ;)

Around Mindarie, sometimes
Around Mindarie, sometimes you don't want to travel too far. There are some nice spots between the inner and outer reefs as well. Since the water is pretty shallow (10 to 15m), heavy unweighted baits or lightly weighted baits are a good option. If you go behind the 3 mile onto the sandy bottom, it can be a desert for miles and takes quite a bit of searching to find anything. Stay close to the broken ground/reefy bits for best success. Look for areas where the cray pots are for a guide to where the good ground is.

Back of Staggies - Burley the key
If you are fishing the back of Staggies use your sounder to find the drop offs and lumps. We try and find ledges in the 12-14mtr area only about 200-300 mtrs behind the reef.
Anchor up on the drop off and then burley up. I normally use old mullies cut up mixed with large pellets, dry bran, tuna oil and water. Mix to a doughy consistency. Have a burly bucket filled and about 3 mtrs below the boat. I also use a kitchen spoon and every 10 minutes drop some over the side.
May take sometime for the fish to come around. If nothing after 30 minutes move.
Last time we did this had 1kg plus Skippy come round. Used size 4 hooks with small ball sinker and pieces of mullie as bait. caught a dozen in couple of hours. Had Samson fish chasing them so put ot live bait on larger gear and caught 15kg Samson Fish. We tried soft plastics but did not want them so went back to bait

As said above
Find a lump or dropoff, structure is the key, anchor and burley, burley, burley. Sometimes the pickers are annoying but I fish sp's now which solves the problem. Get skippy, sambo's and Break-sea quite regularly and pinkies and dhuies are common. Our best arvo is a total of 9 pinkies caught (obviously all not kept) with the biggest going 780mm and two more suspected monster pinkies lost.
You can have alot of fun behind that reef.
