New (2nd Hand) Stacer Advise

As some of you are aware we have the Swifty up for sale. Been looking around to see what is out there to give us an idea of what to look for.
Found a 2006 Stacer Seamaster 519 (5.3 mtr?) with 90 HP Merc 2 stroke and only done 23 hours going for a good price.... and no Black Anchor or 2 vs 4 stroke comments Tongue out coz had Mercs and Mariner before with no probs!!!!
They built in same factory as quintrex so just wondering about quality difference as we were leaning towards a quinnie coastrunner 530!!
Just wondering if anyone has any experience good/bad with these boats.
Cheers,
David

hi dave,

i had a lot of probs with a brand new 4.2 stacer a few years back (8 warranty claims in 15 months including a split keel) but i think that was a lemon.......i have a quinnie 4.8 now and the flared bow is definately a lot softer ride and drier. Just my opinion.

bermuda, quintrex and stacer are all made by telwater pty ltd in Qld.

I had a 525 Stacer Seafisher

Tue, 2010-05-11 07:09

I had a 525 Stacer Seafisher for a few years.  It was a 2000 model I think.

1. Very stable boat and well set-up for fishing.

2.Boat was only lightly built though.  3mm bottom, 2mm sides.  I had mine in to the welders at least three times in three years, getting the ribs welded up and one time the fuel tank actually tore away from it's mounting under-floor.  It also sprung a leak after an errant swivel found it's way under the floor and ate a hole in the thin hull.

3.Not much flotation - a few chopped up bits of foam stuffed under the floor.

4.Bloody hard riding.  Any sort of chop would drive you insane.  Even in glass calm conditions it would find some bumps.  Not particularly inspiring bearing in mind point 2.

Spose it sounds pretty bad but I had the boat for about four years and in that time did about 550hrs of mostly reef use.

Probably wouldn't go there again, got a glass boat now.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Thanks for the replies guys

Couldn't get online prior to going to look. Had a look at as many welds and condition where I could before it got dark. All looked OK. Took the internal side covers off and plenty of floatation in this one. We know we will be compromising comfort and ride but the swiftcraft is too heavy for SWMBO'd to handle on her own when I go get the trailer. Saw a few funny sites a couple of weeks ago retrieving on the beach nearly choked on my beer Sealed.

Most of our boating is/will be inshore, Geo Bay or the sound the ali should do us OK. Never did get out far very often and I am sure the stacer, or similar, will do the job on the right day.
Also have young nephew boarding with us till end of next year and he is keen on tubing etc so should be a better allrounder.

Cheers,

David

PS... The owner called after we got home and has accepted our offer pending another daylight inspection and water test on Friday.

Dave good luck with the new

Dave good luck with the new boat...i'm sure it will suit your needs. Doesn't matter what boat you end up with there is always someone who will let you know the downside of it.

after stacer replaced my previous hull i had trouble free boating for 3 years......see you on the water..

Just like anything else

Tue, 2010-05-11 23:05

It's like cars (Holden vs Ford), outboards (Merc vs Johnson vs Suzuki)etc etc etc..... People have bad experiences, good experiences and good on them for putting their views and experiences forward. I am just hoping that I am not purchasing a product that was built on a Monday or Friday and will get plenty of use out of it. Good thing about this one is that it has more deck space than the swiftcraft and I will not have to duck, or hide, when she is castingYell

Just have to convinse her drifting is the way to go!!!!

Cheers,

David

just thought i should comment i own a 4.2 stacer its now 13 years old best tinnie on the market you could have bought..............10 years ago! quintrex took over stacer and are now very average built boats!  nearly all models quinnie wise split keels especially the 475 bayhunters/caprices do your homework before buying certain models of certain years built

Choice

Wed, 2010-05-12 19:33

Have been for a few runs in my son's[Deepwater]boat and refuse to go in it again. To the point of towing my boat up to Exmouth from Carnarvon every time we go for a visit.

The boat is too light and kills the knees and back with its banging into waves instead of cutting through regardless of what speed or trim. I don't think he will buy another one after the pounding this boat does.

Positive feedback

Wed, 2010-05-12 23:00

Thanks for the positive feedback Paul... Do you mind if I ask how much they gave you for it and if it was just recent? Reason I am asking is in case I pick up a few problems when I take this one for a test run.

David

Stacer

Fri, 2010-05-14 23:09

Paul,
Think I saw your boat on boatcity.com earlier tonight for 35,990... Not a bad markup for the dealer and already sold!!!!

The one I have the offer on is the top of the range with an upgraded GPS/Fishfinder. Pretty much the same as yours but 1 year older with a 2 stroke, VHF radio, no clears (yet) and he's accepted an offer of 22,500.

Didn't get to do the water test today due to having to work. Will sort out a time in the morning to go out.
Cheers,
David

Clears

Fri, 2010-05-14 23:12

Paul,
Did you have the clears fitted or were they on it as part of the package?

If fitted can you give a ball park figure of cost? Or anyone else know approximate cost?

Cheers,
David

Sounds good

Fri, 2010-05-14 23:29

Peter that sounds reasonable... I would guess close to $450 for sides and front as it is a low mount bimini.

Will try to post pic of boat to give you an idea of size.

David

Water testing on Monday. So

Sat, 2010-05-15 20:02

Water testing on Monday. So all going well should have it home on Tuesday.

Sound about right Paul. Approximately 12.5% commission.

Will get some quotes locally for the clears once/if we get it.
Cheers,
David
