Volvo QL Trim Tabs Fitting

Hi,

I've posted this in a couple of other places so one more won't hurt.  I'm in Perth NOR and I am looking to fit some 300 volvo ql trim tabs to my boat. Its an Extreme 665 hardtop (aka 650 game king on www.extremeboats.co.nz) Just getting some quotes and being new to boating don't know what prices I should expect for fitting. So far have been quoted $600 for fitting and then parts which was around $900. Can anyone advise on what price I should expect for fitting or can recommend someone??.

cheers guys the price of the trim tabs are not important might get them from US yet as there is a couple hundred bucks to be saved there, it was the fitting part I was looking at, what is going to be the cost to install in a plate boat as above is $600 reasonable or is it over the top??

I had a look at the install manual for them, seems pretty basic.

It depends on what others are quoting and if you are in a position to fit them yourself?

The install is really straight forward.  Just follow the instructions.  The kit will come with all the connectors.

definately the quote seems excessive, try giving men on boats a call, they are site sponsors and will look after you,

also curious to know where you got the price on the tabs, i was quoted not long ago arond $1200 for a set of 300mm ones

Quote was from All Boat Business but rang back this morning to confirm and was told $1200 for the 300's but funny enough he has the 450's at $1075 due to new stock old stock.  Looks like order will be placed with the US.

fitting

fitting the QLs is straight forward if your handy with a drill and mounting, all equipment is plug and play withthe interceptor unit and battery connections, there is a lead to each tab and one up to the control unit which mounted on the dash , you just need a drill ,holesaw and sika flex to seal the holes,  have you full access to the transon for mounting on the inside of the hull otherwise , on my trailcraft the sealed hull , i had to install two 150 mm round WP access hatches which are water tight to access the rear of the tabs for cable access etc. give me a PM, iam NOR and you can view mine

Im a shipwright and have installed heaps of trim tabs, most to milner centre consoles with 350s on the back, the torque from the motor made the boats list and the tabs used to correct it.

Its exactly as just dhu it says if you have access to the transom its dead easy if not the inspection plate holes are the answer and its not hard to do. $600 for fitting is steep ask what their hourly rate is and get them to do it on that most shipwrights I know charge $66 an hour. If you dont have a teak or cork deck that they have to work around, then its not a big job.

VERY IMPORTANT

Fri, 2010-04-16 14:05

one thing to make sure and is the most important of all if you dont want to waste the $1200 you have just spent on the QL tabs.

because the system works due to the blades moving up and down, the mounting surface has to be COMPLETELY FLAT. any bends or curves in your transom will bend the blade when you try to lower it, this will render them BROKEN with no warranty.

if there is any curves on the mounting surface you will need to make up wedges or block to mout on the transom before the QL tabs.

happy boating

No boating advance since the hollowed out log has really been necessary, but they can make your ride both a lot faster and a lot more comfortabl.

have a play with them!

Iv'e fitted a few of these, I totally agree with snappie, transom has to be dead flat, if not get some 4mm plate and cut to shape, A fair bit of prep work go's into the setup, The hardest part is getting the wires trough the back of the boat and Cable tieing them out of harms way.

I'd charge prob 3-4 labour+ travel,

Thankyou
