New boat opinions
Submitted by Travis on Thu, 2010-12-02 19:26
Hi all,
We are currently looking for a new boat(runabout style) around the 5m mark already have a 75hp honda that we want to use.
The boat will be mostly used for fishing creeks up north, ocean fishing and so on.
Basically looking for ideas and opinions on whats avaliable under the 20,000 mark for hull and trailer.
Thanks Travis

Ride
I've been over to the islands off Carnarvon some 30nm about 4-5 times in this boat and its a very comfortable dry ride.
Its a size where you can still launch and retrieve safey on you own without any difficulties.
There are some good marks in the Gps that Col might be convinced in to leaving in there.

If you wanted glass Im sure
If you wanted glass Im sure Commodore Marine would have a hull and trailer to suit for well within your price range. Ride is alot better than an Ally rig too.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

motor a bit small
sorry mate but i dont think a 75hp honda is going to push a 5 mtr boat to well its way to underpowered you may get away if it was a 2 stroke but hondas just dont have the grunt i would stick to something about 4.5m max

60hp
I run a 60hp Etec on a 5 metre x all 4mm plate ali with a top speed of 29 knots with two people my size [1oo kg] on board and would even think of going any bigger let alone 75 hp, it would not be safe in anything but flat water so the extra horse power is wasted.

Take no notice the 75hp will piss it in on a 5.3 quintrex.
seriously have a look at carnarvonites offer, a fully set up rig in the size you are after, by the time you trade in motors ( whichever is the best ) .
You save thousands on set up costs.

sorry guys
but i have seen so many sad faces at boat ramps because they have under powered there boats unfortunatly i have been on a 4.75m quinnie with a 75 honda and all i can say was dissapointing just didnt have enough balls in a moderate following sea only 2 of us on board you really have to over hp if you are running a 4 stroke i would go for at least a 115 on a 5 mtr boat but the final decision is yours i just think 75 honda wont have the balls

Regulation
Its because of some people over powering there boats that all new boats have a maximum hp rating placed on the HIN tag now. If you do major damage to your boat because of over powering and try to claim insurance you might get a BIG surprise.

Brendan and I have the same problem in common at present... darn air compressors!!! His shat itself, mine just broke the mounting. Same result, both need replacing. For the record, I'm talking a Bayliner Trophy, a Hornet Trophy would skip across the water with a 200 on the back...

thats fast
that is pretty quick maybe its just the yammies got more go than a honda but iwas was not baseing my assesment on top end speed the one i was on just didnt have enough torque to push the boat thru a following sea when you think about it how often do we actually run our boats flat out here in wa so its not all about top end speed you need to have enough torque in your motor so its not spending its life struggling that will fuck your motor pretty quick so just because you have a bit of horsepower there doesnt mean you are going to travel flat out everywhere are you

I will admit in the past,
I will admit in the past, Honda 4's had an average reputation for torque.
I have been a Yammy man in the past , but this new 90 4 stroke has tonnes of grunt !

copy that.
a good mate has a 50 hp merc 4 stroke on his 4.8cc, and it does 25knots + no dramas.
i have a new suzuki 115 on my 6m ally seacraft, and it will do over 32knots wot, and cruises fucken superbly on abot 18knots in ANY condition., following seas, or punching head on into shit.

When they say looked at it
When they say looked at it could also be prop, the motor too deep and dragging too much.

my 5.6m quinny has a 90 hp 2
my 5.6m quinny has a 90 hp 2 stroke on the back and i find that to be plenty, only ever had it flat when the ocean was like glass. a 75hp on a 5-5.3m will be enough with out doubt in my opion. definately cant complain about the hull or how it rides, never been wet yet. But in saying that i know my limits and my boats limits try not to be out there in anything over 15- 18 knots with a bit of swell around. the main thing is your happy and confident with your boat, its your life ring out there.

15, 17 or 19 feet
We have had a Honda 75 on our 19 foot Fraser and pushed along at 28 knots WOT, possibly a little underpowered if you had a big load on,but would be ideal on the 17 foot Runabout.
Can helpin getting you into a hull and trailer for aound the $20k

Creek Work up North
If you main use is going to be in the creeks up north ,then stay away from glass.
It has to be ali in my opinion. I had a 5.6 m Quinnie classic fitted with a 90 honda for my time in Hedland and it was a great unit for the conditions up there.
Creeks were no problem and we went far and wide chasing mackie's .

Check out a Trailcraft
Check out a Trailcraft 5.0m old man used to have one with a 75hp to stroke it was great enough power for 2-3 people plus gear. The rear door was also a great feature and the self draining deck not only was it a great saftey feature it made cleaning a breeze!

I love the quinnies. Also
I love the quinnies. Also the trailcraft pro fish is a great boat. The Quinne would be softer ride but the Traily is just ruggeded and well set out IMHO.
The 75 would be fine on either a 5 or 5.3 mtr.
I ran a 5mtr Quintrex bow rider out of Hillarys with 80 Yamay fourstroke(vertiucally the same power as a 75 honda). I was the only car in the ramp on Thursday arvo and man it was mint. Not often i get a supprise with boats (having tested thousands) but for the weather, sea conditions and power to weight i was left with a huge smile.
Id stick with the Ali though..

ali or glass
Glass would be ok in most creeks except onslow area where the are abit rocky, around Karratha and Hedland the main problem would be pushing in or out of creeks if you run out of water. The trip home would be better as it can be a nightmare with the wind in the arvo.Mate has a 4.5 metre alli craft with a 60 honda thats brilliant. His 4.5 is bigger than my 4.75 quinny I had .I would look at commordores boats as they have plenty of boats up here and the 75 honda on a 5metre would be sweet.
