New to Fishing with Lures and Jiggs

I have always used baits to fish ,never really ever attempted to use jiggs and lures . was wondering if anyone could give me some general information on using lures and jiggs  , fishing around rotto , five fathom bank and 40 metres . What sort of gear would i need ?

provide some more info

what gear you running.

different rods for lures/jig. do you mean soft plastics also.

also depends on $$ if you need to purchase new rods/reels.

there are a multitude of options.......

a PE2-3 rod will easily handle 40m jigging and  more if conditions allow.

for softplastics a 6-10/12kg rod would be best as 40m would require up to 1.5Oz jig head but can be as light as 1/4 depending on conditions.......

lures (minnows etc) will rarely hit 40m and are more surface orientated with deep divers hitting 8m max.......

help us narrow down your requirements

Softies!

For Five Fathom Bank you can go right down to 2-4 kg bream gear and 1/8 oz jighead...not deeper than 20 metres there but using gear that light you normally need to be anchored.

Can also use the same gear out at the Fads for dolphinfish...you just let 'em run, only dramas happen if they get you around the fad or another boat!

And if you come across a school of salmon next season, same applies...from a boat, not so much from shore (too many things they can bust you off on!)

You can use plastic in those

Mon, 2009-07-20 19:51

You can use plastic in those depths, but it tends to get a bit hard rigging them on jigheads. A lot easier to do in <20m of water. You can dropshot them (i.e. put them on your paternoster) or put a large bean sinker in front of them (e.g large twisty glow tails).

The easiest lures to start off with would be octa type jigs. Octas are the easiest to use IMO and cheap compared to some of the others. Otherwise raba rabas or lucanus are good. They come with lighter gauge hooks than the octas though (which are fine, but only on lighter lines like <30lb). Pretty easy to use. You can even just chuck the rod on the rodholder and let rocking of the boat give it action. Otherwise just drop the jig to the bottom, wind up a meter or two and then either just hold the rod, or slowy lift the rod and drop it.

I quite like jigs (knife types) and do that most times I go fishing, but you really need the right gear if you intend to do a fair bit of it. You should be able to use a rod you allready have, but an unsuitable rod can be heavy to use all day or difficult to impart the right action. Might do in a pinch to start out to see whether you like it. Using heavier jigs during sambo season at the right time of year/places, or hit the amberjacks on the barges can be an easy and fun way to start jigging Laughing

Berleying up in the right places can bring bigger fish which will take plastics or jigs. E.g. skippy, snapper, sambos, etc.

You'll get kingfish on plastics, but only if you can find them, and thats the hard part :p

During summer, theres more pelagics around which will take more surface lures. Either trolling lures around for tuna/mackerel/dolphinfish or casting to tuna schools, salmon schools or dolphinfish.

Be careful though, lures can be both addictive and expensive, lol. I havent used much bait all year, so 90%+ of my fishing is on lures of some sort.

A properly designed/worked

Tue, 2009-07-21 09:31

A properly designed/worked lure can immitate a real baitfish pretty well, and if you're a fish do you want a live, but on the brink of death baitfish, or a piece of old stinking bait? (obviously using fresh bait is a lot better). Sometimes the speed, action or movement can trigger aggression strikes. E.g. barra when they are not feeding will snap at a lure dragged in front of their faces just because it is an intruder in their territory.

jigging and soft plastics

Tue, 2009-07-21 10:44

have been itching to take up jigging for about 18 months but was layed up for a year with an injury, but since the doc allowed me out in my boat I have caught more fish and species in my last few trips jigging than I have on bait for about 2 years. ask Matt (hlokk) about our first trip off the cape...ha ha

there is real potential to catch fish on jigs and soft plastic. even been out in mates boats and outfished them on soft plastics when they use bait and have converted many to soft plastics and they are now keen to jig.

plenty of people with more experience than me but the point is they work and very well.

for me I like the action, energy, pace and mental challenge of catching fish on jigs and soft plastics. no mess either and nothing like the take when the fish realises it's hooked.......very exciting

you dont need expensive gear but you need patience and just dont take bait so you HAVE TO learn. once you hit the mark it becomes  easier to catch fish.

even bream on lures is exciting and it teaches you many lessons which can be transfered to offshore fishing

Check out JK from Fishin'

Check out JK from Fishin' Trip which is a fishing show on Foxtel. You can download his shows at this web site and they chase pinkies on soft plastics a lot. As well as other bigger fish on the east coast. Download a 25 minute show and watch it on your computer. I've learnt a lot from here.
