New to Hilliaries

Can anybody help with a bit of info on how to get to the back of three mile reef.

I have not been out to this area before and after looking at a chart of the area my plan is this.

Exit the boat harbour on clearing the southern groyne alter course to 250 deg true and travel approx 4 nm then alter to350 deg true and travel approx 5 nm this by my calculations should put me to the west of three mile.

Comments on the above plan welcomed.

Thanks

Department of Transport in Hillaries has BOATING GUIDES.

You want the "North Metropolitan Boating Guide" if you do not want to get a propper chart or do ot have a GPS Chart plotter.

These are handy and free of charge with good info.

Not for navigation, but very handy for info and layout.

if your at the right time when the ferry departs, follow it...

or like i did yesterday is go to the left of little island and slow it down a little and you cross some reef around 3.9m then from them faster and it gets to around 10m and deeper and deeper, to 16m is where we went and it seamt 3 miles out...

i'm guessing you don't have a GPS or chart plotter but if you head once you get out of the marina in a west south west direction you will be fine there are reefs that break either side of you and you should never have to get under 6 metres deep. even this depth will break on a decent swell but by no means ever go less than 3 metres, even 4 is pushing your luck.

Yes, bang on Rick.

Also, by day you can line up the Hillarys Lighthouse in the middle of 2 large aerials/poles on the horizon. If you head in the direction that Carps has pointed out, after about 500m of travelling the aerials will become evident. But as the others have said take caution.
