New jetty for Jurien Bay

Construction of a new jetty at Jurien Bay could begin as early as next year after the State Government allocated funding towards the project.

The Government yesterday announced funding for more than 300 projects as part of the first round of the Royalties for Regions Grants Scheme.

The local community and Shire have been exploring ways to save the two wooden jetties, after the Department of Planning and Infrastructure planned to knock them down two years ago.

The Shire of Dandaragan has welcomed the $750,000 allocated for the Jurien Bay foreshore and jetty redevelopment.

Chief Executive Clinton Strugnell says the town’s jetties have a long tradition with tourism and recreation.

“They’re in the order of 40-years-old and certainly there’s a very strong association with Jurien Bay and the jetties,” he said.

“Certainly, the council and the community feel that the jetty here is very much recognised at Jurien and it’s important that we have one going into the future.

“It’s an area which is used for the community for large gatherings, for things like Australia day.

“There’s quite often bands in the park down there and going into the future, we see it as a key meeting place for community events.”

I think all the boating facilities, are badly in need of upgrading or replacing. All boaties and fisherpeople, have been treated like second class citizens, for, far too long.

Why...

...are there no boat ramps between Mandurah and the northern end of Warnbro Sound? Lots of boaties (including me) in the Singleton/Golden Bay/Secret Harbour/Port Kennedy stretch that would benefit from a ramp near Long Point.

But I DO agree with the Jurien upgrade...was there over Easter and you just can't put a price on the number of families enjoying themselves on that jetty. The seal was knocking off every other fish that was being reeled in but most people were just having a blast trying to get their catch in before it was monstered...great atmosphere for kids!

Auslobster,

That is a very good question that you pose, only a pollie can answer that one. There again, I imagine you have seen the state of the ramps in the river and they have the audacity to charge for parking, with bugger all else for your money. When are the local councils going to realise, all they are doing is ripping the general public off.

Maybe all councils, that have boat ramps within their boundaries should be reported to the Triple C, for the shear rip off that they indulge themselves in.
