New PB Dhu on SP...

Went out for a fish last Sunday the wind and current weren't the best but I still decided to twitch a plastic around some shallow reefy/coral rising up from 16 m - 9 m, last drift of the day I nailed this 15 - 16 kg Male Dhu on a 6 inch plastic right on the front edge of the lump. The gear i was using was a Stella 3000 fd running PE 1.5 with an 3 - 6 kg Ian Miller T Curve. Smoked me on the first run I called it for a Sambo the way it peeled off time and time again, after 2 or 3 mins I had it turned and started the old up and down slug fest reveiling it's true identity great fight on the light string and stoked with my biggest Dhu to date especially on a plastic and light spin.

Great fish! Funny, I nearly ended up in your grounds when the forecasting was a bit off for the Abrolhos last weekend, but then it came clear so we shot through! Nothing that big was landed up there, thats for sure!

Cheers Till, Lamby, Timmo it's been great fun gettin stuck into good fish in the shallows and on the light gear makes it even better. Till when where you over at Abrolhos? How did ya go? I was going to head over myself but the weather wasn't looking to flash so didn't bother.

Very nice fish for the light

Very nice fish for the light gear, I still can't bring myself to go quite that light when there's dhuies and trout to be had.
When I was at the Abrolhos last week we were discussing the size of the dhuies at the islands vs the dhuies along the coast and we all agreed the island fish seemed smaller in general (13-14kg being a good island fish). Be interesting to hear what ohters think

I was there on the weekend, the weather was a little ordinary on and off.

The spanish macks have apparently really slowed down, we managed a few sharkies though. Pete got three dhufish in 30min on McArthy 7" Jerk Minnow in Pink Elf or Orca, I forget which, a 65cm trout on jig, a few baldies as well.

Good fish!!

You do well out of Dongara, keep the pics coming!
Tim, I agree that the island Dhufish are smaller, it seems to only apply to the Dhuies, must be a reason?

Island Dhuies

Wed, 2010-07-28 18:24

Tim I know people have some patches over there off the south group that talk about dhuies hitting 20kg marks. I agree though many of the dhuies are between 6 and 10kg fish. The biggest we have got was around the 16 to 17kg mark and another around the 14-15kg mark. both solid fish but were definite stand outs. The 16kg was really close to the islands.

I come from Mandurah and seeing 20kg fish is pretty regular of Dawesville especially.

The light gear we use now with plastics would be really interesting fighting something of that calibre.

The island fish are great fun but once you know you have a dhuie bringing them up slowly is our major concern so that they are a good chance of going back down on release weights.

Thanks Again...

For all your comments fellas, yer I would have to agree I fish Abrolhos Islands probably once every 3 or 4 months and the Dhu's over there on Average are a smaller size we catch lots in the 4 - 8 kg range best I've seen caught was 13 kg other than that a 10 kg fish is a bigger fish for the Islands. I also work in a Tackle shop in Gero and I get to hear a lot of storys and see alot of photos I have only seen a couple of photos of 18 - 22 kg fish but not many. I definately catch better sized Dhu's from my home ground off Dongara.

Ha Ha Spooled don't worry mate I will strappin myself in for the Monte's trip I can feel the pain already lol

An come on Tim break out the light gear and give it a crack other than the monster Sambo's not much can smoke ya on the light spin it's addictive once you start tho ha ha

Well done Kingfisher glad to hear your crackin the plastic code soon you won't be needing bait, and it's such a good way of catching Dhus, usually a clean corner jaw hookup which makes for a quick an easy realease.

Great capture Twitch.  Looking forward to one that size...yeah, yeah I'm being converted to plastic too.

Yeah was nearly a visit from Till and myself, but the weather came good for the Islands.  A visit might be on the cards soon.

Cheers Pete
