New sounder. Overseas prices

I have decided its time to spend the money and buy a new Furuno FCV 1100. After speaking with a few people that have or sell them it looks to be the pick of the lot.

I have priced them up here in Perth and with a 1KW transducer they come it at around $5500.

I have had a look around over in the states and with the Aussie dollar so good at the moment i can get one to my front door and save around $2000.

Is it worth the risk even though the stores are repitable and come with full warranty.

My neighbour has just bought a new sounder and GPS from the states and said he has had no problems with the purchase and said he saved around a grand.

Has anyone done the same and if so who did you buy through.

Thanks

With the transducer do you have transom mount or through hull. Would love to have a 2kw but have heard you can only do through hull. Alot of work involved with a plate boat to have through hull i have been told.

The price i can get is delivered price with a 1 kw transom mount transducer.

Thats what i am tossing up at the moment, do i buy local and spend the xtra dollars for local support and warrenty or buy overseas and save the money but if anything goes wrong i than have the issues with having to send it back.

I can use paypal and be covered if anything goes wrong with the purchase. I am sort of kicking myself i didn't buy one off Ryan when he had the special on.

Decisions decisions

i'm a huge supporter of local businesses i'd never buy a FCV1100 oversea's.....the local help/back up is worth sh!t loads. I wouldn't run a 1kw tranny on a FCV1100 at all, the unit is capable up to 3kw and to get the best out of the unit it would be a must imo to go the 2kw like we have done.

Will get in touch with taylors next week and have a chat. If its just brackets welded to the transom no probs. Only thing i can see go wrong is being such a large transducer what are the dramas with hitting bottom or sand. I would hate to damage 1.

Might have to look at the 585 with 1kw than.

If a 1kw costs $1K for the fcv1100 whats 2 x 2kw gonna cost.

no too bad

Steve, not too bad;

2kw 200khz approx $440
2kw 50khz approx $1770

go for 2kw 28khz, that's what i did which is even better for deeper water & same price as the 50khz

The 1kw FCV1100 will be better than the FCV585, but if ya can go the extra!

50khz, 28khz

Sat, 2007-10-06 14:57

With this setup how does the unit operate in depths between 5mtrs to 50mtrs as i thought it would only operate in deeper water at its best, and also whats the pickup like as i know with my current sounder when i change from 200khz to 50khz its alot slower.

Might have to pop in and have a chat with you again i think.

Thanks for the help guys

Which 1

Sat, 2007-10-06 15:57

I have shopped around and can get a 585 in aus for $2270 with a 1kw TM transducer and i am looking at around $6K all up for the 1100.

Fishing in depths up to 350mtrs will i need the 1100 or will i get away with the 585. I am struggling to come to terms with spending $6k on a sounder but if it means i can do what i want than i have no option.

Most of my fishing is 40-150mtrs but want to head out and fish the trench alot more.

Thanks again guys

My sounder i have now is a great sounder and reads water up to 180mtrs but this stops me fishing deeper hence the upgrade.

As much as i like the 585 it cannot cut the real deep water stuff to MY liking. Even my FCV1100 unit really works hard in that depth YES you heard right. So Steve to answer your question, it wont do what you want and i'd like to see what Taylor marine say, i'd be supprised if they disagree.

The 585 isn't commercial nor been designed for hi res deep water stuff. The FCV1100 will give you the best hi def bottom you need to get more fish & find more ground hense why it's the most popular bottomfishing/wetlinning/crayfishing commercial unit on the market. The 585 is in a different league, good to 150 with hi def info with a 1kw.........250-350 will it give you what you want, not in my opinion.

No probs Steve, when i say my FCV1100 works hard, that's to get a hi def picture that i want/expect out in the really deep water. You need to adjust the TVG and other settings when ya hit the deep, close in hi def settings are different......once you've sussed it out it's an awesome tool.....took me a while!

Buying overseas

Mon, 2007-10-08 03:30

Hi guys,
I've been buying fishing and related gear from countries other than those I been living in for well over 25years.
I have brought rods, reels, rod blanks, lures, line, sonars, GPS units and VHF extras and spares.
Even in the past month I've had shipments from South Africa, Japan and USA.

NEVER have I had a credit card purchase 'go wrong', the golden rule is to use the safe option.

Always use a fax to transmit your final order with your CC details, use the internet for all communications and to confirm ALL product details only.
Just print off the order form and complete it by hand.

If you get your electronics from a reputable manufacturer and (their recommended) supplier, product upgrades and after-sales service is much better and far quicker than you will get from your local supplier.
Example: I had Airmar fly-in a new duel frequency transducer because the Spanish agent had swapped the original, and be told by Airmar to use the non-standard (and $700) 'ducer as a door stop!  All at zero cost to me!
Furthermore I am still obtaining product support for units well over 10years old!

Following recommendations made on this forum I asked Taylor Marine for a quote on a Furuno 585 sonar and never even had a reply!
Here in the 'old world' I can still save money by obtaining goods from Oz rather than locally.
And if I can sort out someway of finding a supplier in Japan for Furuno gear I will go there.

Based on the above I say damn all this 'shop local' rubbish, if they want my custom they should start being competitive - with the internet the world is my/our shop window.

AUSSIE DOLLAR

Mon, 2007-10-08 06:27

With the aussie dollar so good at the moment i thought that prices would come down. Recieved an email from a repitable company in US and i can get the same unit from US delivered to front door and save $1800. Thats a fair wack of money. Even if i get the transducer from Taylors i still save $2K.

Only prob i can see is if you need after sales service or there is a problem if you buy from a local dealer than they will try to help you out as much as they can. If something goes wrong than you need to send the unit back to US.

It's not our fault that we pay more in Australia. We also have overheads & staffing  that many companys o/s dont have as they work out of little units.

Steve and myself said the same thing re local service/help.......a guy i know on this exact website brought a colour sounder o/s and had issues with it, he sent it back and lost it for 4 months through a warranty claim......................stuff that so all's not what it seems when ppl say "i've had no issues buying from oversea's".....i see the other side also

Strong Aussie $

Mon, 2007-10-08 20:05

Pro's and con's both ways. I've ordered plenty of stuff off the net, but its often been stuff that I can't get in Oz.

My question is, with the Aussie Dollar at 23 year highs and possibly rising further, when are we going to see its impact filter through to high end fishing gear/electronics with subsequent price reductions?

John

You want Big John ::: nothing gets cheaper to the consumer that's life. I use to buy alot of motorbike parts from the USA when my kids were racing motorcross .I could get them delivered to my door cheaper and faster than i could through the local shop never had any hassels with that. I nearly brought  a plotter From the USA but the thought of having to send it back for repairs changed my mind when you add up cost of postage to get it the taxes you pay on it if it's over $1000 and the cost of sending it back if it is faulty they want pay for that i can assure you just isn't worth it. You can't put a price on after sales help and that is availble if you shop at the rite place .

What i did do is used the web to search the plotter i was looking for and it was cheaper in QLD so with that in hand approached some local dealers who matched the price no prob

Boat show

Tue, 2007-10-09 06:21

Will head down to the boat show and have a look to see what specials are there.

I am sold on the FCV1100 so now its just a matter if finding one at the right price.

Once thats done then there is the fitting of the right transducer.

Thanks for the help guys.

By the way Ryan, i saw a diagram of a 2kw setup and it looks like a through hull transducer sitting in a custom bracket on the transom. Is that the way that i would need to go to have the 2kw set up. Will pop in and see Taylors aswell and have a chat also.

$$$

Wed, 2007-10-10 23:12

Theres alot of money to justify the upgrade isnt there Steve.

I had really wanted the 1100 myself but after alot of work to convince the missus I needed it I really couldnt justify the extra money.

I thought about buying O/S but after talking to the local guys I got a good deal and Ive also now got their support in trying to sort out a few bugs Im having with the setup of the 1Kw transducer that I wouldnt have had if I bought it offshore.

While the moneys always better in my pocket than someone elses service is also worth something too.
