Submitted by VinnyWong on Mon, 2012-11-12 20:36
Hey guys i am wanting to start spearfishing and have some questions to ask. Is there any spearfishing guns to recommend? Whats the difference between air and rail guns? What type of wetsuit should i get and thickness? What equipment do i also require to go spearfishing? Do i need a license?

1) Air guns use (captive)
1) Air guns use (captive) compressed air, rail guns use jelly rubber to sling the spear.
2) Most spearos favour open-cell two-piece suits, 3mm.
3) Mask, snorkel, fins, speargun, other stuff is optional; floatlines, reels, flashers.
4) You need a license for crays and another to shoot from a boat.
Try the site sponsors Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz for gear, or WAUC for some more tips

A good first gun is probably a 1.1-1.2m rail gun, there are lots to choose from.

rob allen
Rob Allen are usually a good choice, pretty decent in price. I just got a new RA sparid 1.0 for $370 delivered, not a bad bit of gun. There's plenty of alternatives cheaper and more expensive, depends on your budget and usage.
I also have a 1.4 freedivers but its not my favourite, its my bluewater gun and is way too big for general usage in tight.

Beuchat are an awesome brand most of my soft gear (wetsuit, gloves, socks, mask etc) are by them. Gun wise id suggest a 1.2 with a 20m float line and float to start with, rabitech, edge, aimrite, freedivers, beuchat, rob allen, torreli. All those brands will do a gun sutied for your needs and some wont set you back and arm and a leg

I would suggest joining a club
WAUC is a good place to start, http://www.waundersea.com , they will give you a lot of good info, and are just about to start up a mentor program to help guys getting into the sport.
As for gear, NOR has Hookah dive in Wangarra, and SOR, Bunbary, is Ockys Water world, and also the WAUC site has a load of sponsors on their website.
