Penguin?

Fri, 2013-03-08 18:14

Are you sure its a Penguin hull?

Looks very much identical to the Star boats that were very popular around the time those rego numbers were handed out.

Sheart! Single axle? Light

Fri, 2013-03-08 18:33

Sheart! Single axle? Light truck tyres? Not much clearance from the gaurd either. Cool boat tho, go anywhere, pity bout the two stroke ;)

I agree. sort that trailer out bro or you might lose the whole rig! Apart from that, nice protection from the elements.

yeah pretty sure its a penguin boat carnarvonite.

Yeah Tim-o its a big boat for a single axle they are light truck tyres though so thats one bonus. I might get a new trailer for it one day and a suzi 4 stroke eventually but for now it will do everything i want and need it to.

Id be strappin the thing down

Fri, 2013-03-08 19:25

Id be strappin the thing down too, and dunk the trailer right in when retrieving, dont trust the strength of that winch support with the weight of that boat. I dont think that trailer is meant for that boat

Nice looking boat!, No doubt

Fri, 2013-03-08 20:12

Nice looking boat!, No doubt it will get you out to some good areas to fish. You'll love that big windscreen and hardtop when the weather gets a bit rough :)

Agree that the Trailer doesnt look like its meant for that boat.

But still, it might be fine for towing it around? The boat might not be as heavy as it looks? Do you know how much the whole thing weighs?

I mean my 5.8m Ally with 115 merc 4stk is on a single axle trailer(with light truck tyres and HD Axle) and only weighs 1312kg total(with 100L of fuel). Though everyone who looks at mine reckons the whole rig would be around or over 2 ton. In saying that when the time comes to get a new trailer for my tub i will be looking for a tandem axle. Like the idea of having another wheel on the side if one blows.

My winch post on my trailer looks exactly the same and when retrieveing i only ever have the back roller just touching the water when i winch my boat back up, so the boat centers and levels itself right on my multiroller trailer. No keel rollers on my trailer even though my boats an ally. But yeah find out how much your tub actually weighs and as Tim-o suggest you might have to back the trailer in a bit further to put less strain on it.

The trailer is built much

Fri, 2013-03-08 20:02

The trailer is built much hevier than it looks in the pic and i think the boat is lighter than it looks. I can still tow it around with my 3l hilux with 160l of fuel. But i will be looking for a tandem trailer eventually as i do like the idea of a 2nd wheel if one blows. and it sways around a bit as it is.

When retreiving it on the weekend we where dropping the trailer in to the top of the guards and the boat would come right up and didnt have to winch far at all. Its got a big spring loaded V down the back of the trailer to pull it up the trailer strait.

I will weigh it when i am home i ran out of time last break. And it doe have a strap over it holding it down now. That was on the way home after buying it.

The hard top keeps things nice and dry. Will give it a good test out up at jurien next weekend.

Ah sounds like you got it all

Fri, 2013-03-08 20:19

Ah sounds like you got it all under control then. Should also find out how much down weight is on the towball, as you might find that there isnt enough weight forward of the axle(towball down weight) which could be contributing to the trailer swaying around a bit.

Yeah i tow my Ally with my 2002 3L TD hilux too. Goes alright, getting up to 90-95km/h on the open road happily on about 17.8L/100km for mine. On cooler days or at night i'll sit on 100km/h as the Lux engine doesnt get as hot.

Point to note too when you get it weighed is also find out the max tow rating of your vehicle. I know my Hilux is 1800kg, so i got about 450kg extra i can put in my tub before getting close to overweight. Not that i do put that much extra in though.

Took the words outa my mouth

Fri, 2013-03-08 20:48

Took the words outa my mouth (or from my keyboard) about the weight on the draw bar, when I bought my little 15 ft, the transom was like over 500mm hangin off the back of the trailer, too much weight on the ball, moved the winch bar and axle up and now it tows mint and launches and retrieves better. The weight should be on the compliance plate on the trailer?

Yeah for the money i had to

Fri, 2013-03-08 20:30

Yeah for the money i had to spend there was a few compromises to be made. The trailer was one of those compromises.

The new luxs can tow 2250kg. But it cruises along towing the boat at 100kmph. haha except for up the rolands hill between bunno and collie was back to 70kmph up there in the middle of the day.

We are considering putting a second axle on that trailer.

Yeah the 2005-2012 Hiluxs can

Fri, 2013-03-08 20:43

Yeah the 2005-2012 Hiluxs can do 2250kg. I think the newest ones 2012+ can now do 2500kg? But yeah still something i think alot of people overlook when buying boats is actually looking what they can legally tow with what vehicle they have, including once they have lumped all their gear and extra weight into their boat for a day out or extended trip.

And yep common rail diesel power means 100km'h towing is easy. I'll get there eventually hahahaha.

I looked at putting a second axle on my trailer too, but after speaking to alot of trailer places(including Martins Trailer Parts) and looking at all the costs involved(parts, labour, engineering to re-cert it as a tandem trailer) i just thought it wasnt worth it as it was nearly 60% of the cost to just buy a new tandem axle I beam trailer. So probably next year a new tandem axle trailer that will be on my list or spends.

Personally

I'd be putting tandem under this rig straight up, for peace of mind, especially if you plan on towing great distances. And yes it does look like a Star as carnarvonite mentioned. Nice looking rig though.

Nice boat, I had a 6m penguin

Mon, 2013-03-11 09:13

Nice boat, I had a 6m penguin a fair while back, similar to yours but didn’t have the hard top. Very solid boats (5-6mm plate from memory). Should move along well with the 140hp. You will find they’re not the most stable at rest, but very capable of punching into a decent sea. Keep an eye out for second hand trailers, wouldn’t hurt to have a tandem. Just depends how much towing you plan on doing.
