New trailer - bearing seal

 Hi all,

I have just bought a brand new dual axle trailer from a "popular" Australian manufacturer.

Can you please check the rear of the hub in the attached pics.  This is from the non brake axle.  I was looking for the traditional rubber waterproof seal which sits outside the rear of the hub on the axle.  This trailer did not come with them.

Am I missing something or is this a new design of bearing protection?  The trailer has not seen water yet.

Thank you all in advance.

Chris

This is what i understand is the marine seal you are looking for which runs on the stainless 'liner'

The boat yard I bought trailer from (agents for the trailer) gave me 4 sets of the 2 part seal system.  The brand is the same as well - yes...Dunbier.

I was thinking exactly the same.

Shop gave me the rubber seal but it is a PITA especially for a new trailer which you should expect to be perfect.

Back in 2013 I bought a non braked trailer probably from the same company and thats what I got. Didnt even look but after a month I thought id adjust them and found the bearings were fukd and full of water. It had only been in the water a few times.  Cheap chinese bearings anyway.

Yeah, never assume they are well greased from new.

I bought a new trailer from Papas (non-boat) Not much use over 12 months, checked them, rumbly. Pulled them, stuffed, had been installed with just a smear of grease. BIL bought an expensive Australian-made camper trailer, had a bearing actually fail on the road less than a year old, same deal. hardly any grease apparent. As to the seals, conventional seals don't do well immersed in water. Annoying as it is with something brand new, I'd be pulling them apart to check for adequate grease and replace those seals. Or plan on changing them out complete in 12 months..   BTW, "cheap chinese bearings" will do the job if they are not allowed to get full of water. I personally use Timkens from Statewide Bearings nowadays, and they are cheaper than buying any brand from boating outlets. Last set of Ford Slimlines w/marine seals came in under $80 for a set of 4.

Thank you for the responses.  Yes it is a popular Aussie trailer with agents in Perth.  I was very suprised to see no seal.

I have the seal but such a pain to do.  I buy my Japanese Koyo bearings from Martins.  I will pull them off and put the rubber seal on.

Expected better from a brand new trailer.

Strangely

Strangely, I have had people tell me normal seals work better and boat seals are a waste of time !

Standard seals seemed ok

Sun, 2020-03-15 10:14

Just replaced bearings and seals on my tinny trailer and noticed they were standard seals and not marine spec. They havent been done since i got the trailer so atleast 2 years old and 20+ launches and have to be over 2000km travelled... plus what ever was done before i got it.

Just had standard seals, one side was still close to perfect and the other was due for some love, looked and smelt like it had been hot more than anything. Had proper marine grease in them but as far as water ingress the standard seals seemed to be holding up really well..

My old ski boat trailer ran marine seals and I would have to do them every year, so ill see how these new ones go on the tinny.
