New Yakker

Hey fellas, i've been keen to get into yak fishing for a while and I just picked up myself a lifetime angler 3 fishing kayak off gumtree (205kg carrying capacity, 2 seats)

Im new to this whole kayaking business but pretty damn keen and i was hoping for a bit of advice. I've done some river fishing with pretty slim pickings and im hoping to take it out into the ocean.

Can anyone tell me some good beginner spots in the ocean to paddle out from? Just somewhere where myself and maybe a mate can paddle out without having to worry about getting smashed the hell up by waves haha. I'm keen to catch anything, as long as there are plenty biting (except blowies) - its hard to get my mates or girlfiend into fishing when you float around for an hour without catching a thing haha

Anyway, much appreciated fellas.

Where abouts are you? Places like Penguin island always seems to fish well for herring and the like. Tend to do ok in the Canning up from Riverton. Also have a look at YakFishWest, lots of great info and people that will help.  Paul

Hey guys, thanks for the info, im in kensington-south perth so all these are a bit of a drive but easily reached.

one last question, if i head out from hillaries do i have to go in the morning when its calmer?

Penguin Island and cockburn sound sweet too, ive heard there are heaps of snapper down there which would be sick. Where abouts in the sound do i head out from??

I think i might take a crack tomorrow morning =D

I fished from a kayak for

Sat, 2013-03-09 21:43

I fished from a kayak for quiet a few years around Penguin Island/Garden Island(as I live down there)-now I use a Yamaha 3 seater Jetski, with all my kayak fishing gear on the back.

This morning, I was behind Penguin Island and Point Peron, this is the best place to try for fishing when there is a strong Easterly wind like this morning. You will be safe and the water flattens out once you get behind the Islands.

You need to leave the beach from the Safety Bay side when the Eastly wind is blowing, and paddle or drift over the weed banks towards Penguin Island(you will catch some squid on the way),then once behind the Island you will catch either herring or tailor,as I did this morning. Also try for king george whiting with the fresh squid for bait(that you hopefully have caught).

Good luck and enjoy.

 That's okay...as for

That's okay...as for tomorrow(Monday) I would NOT be going out anywhere on the ocean in a kayak-have a look at the wind forecast.

It's going to be a strong southly, and you do not want to be on the open water/ocean,as this will most likely be your first time out-I've also got tomorrow off,and I won't even be going out on the Ski.

Strong easterly tomorrow ,

Strong easterly tomorrow , but if you arn't going miles out you should be okay, can always hug the coastline somewhat..

Goodluck, maybe try chucking some twisties at the northern side of the first reef out of the harbour, usually get some herring there.

 Just remember if your going

Just remember if your going out in the ocean kayaks are seen as small boats by the powers at be, so you have to have the same safety equipment as a boat, pfd1, inshore flares, anchor and bailer, just a heads up for you.

Thanks a tonne for the advice. But damn, i guess i have a bit to buy then =/

I've just bought a Humminbird 561 fishfinder off amazon US for $50 lol well it was $150 minus $100 cos i won a gift card in a uni survey =D $50 for a sounder that goes for $250 at BCF makes me happy lol. Just happy enough to not feel so bad about spending my money overseas =D

Is anyone selling some flares, a lift jacket or an anchor on the cheap? also do i need a full pack of flares or can i just split a pack with one of my mates?

The joys of being a student ahaha

Much appreciated

 Probably pick the safety

Probably pick the safety gear up from one of the site sponsors. Pretty sure the packs of flares you buy come with what you need to take, so splitting isnt really an option. Got to say though, kayak fishing is bloody good fun, and addictive, I am out almost every weekend some where, think my wife wishes I had never got into it!!!
