New Zealand Snapper
Submitted by tcarroll on Mon, 2014-12-15 18:03
Hi Guys.
I am heading over to the south island of New Zealand in January and am looking at doing a bit of land based snapper fishing around Nelson and Picton.
Can anyone give me some ideas on what might be a good outfit to use to strayline from the shore? I have not had much experience fishing for snapper from shore.
Also if anybody has been to the south island of NZ and has any must see places, I would love to hear about them!
Cheers!!

Okay no worries. I had just read on the net that snapper moved in to the sounds on the south island in summer.
Will have to give it a crack and see how I go!

+1 for the cod
King Chief is correct, the blue cod down there are sensational! (just watch bag and oversize limits when in the sounds)
If you have the chance head up to Nelson Lakes area for the trout. Blenheim and surrounds will produce great trout within walking distance from town and also salmon at the mouth.
Can't go wrong, very jealous.

I grew up in Picton and did some fishing as a kid. Never saw a Snapper. Blue Cod, Perch and Terakihi were the fish most often caught and usually from boats further up the sounds. There are loads of eagle rays in the bay in front of Picton.
I suggest you do your research - things may have changed in the 30+ years since I lived there.
