Hillarys boating advice
Submitted by Burra on Thu, 2014-12-18 13:25
Hi guys, I finally have bought myself a boat here in WAand am going to take it for a spin off Hillarys tomorrow morning. I have noticed that there is a fair bit of shallow ground out to 3 mile reef. I have no chart plotter and a sounder that needs some serious attention which is making me a bit cautious about heading out in the early morning. I am wondering if any of you regular fishos could give me some advice on areas to avoid etc?? Now I have a Tub I can hopefully post a few good reports if I manage to jag something.
Any help would be appreciated, cheers.

If you are planning on
If you are planning on staying inside the reef the water colour will help you - light spots are sand, dark spots weed or grass beds. Drift between them and you're in with a chance for squid, herring or maymaybe even the odd whiting. If you want to go behind the reef I'm sure there will be a number of boats heading out to check pots so follow one of them through the gap straight out oor head towards Mullaloo and then through one of the gaps in the reef there. Watch for breaking water or swell lifting quickly as this will likely be reef.
Good luck

Download the Navionics app
Download the Navionics app for your phone, it's about $15. Then you can use your phone as a chart plotter until you get a proper one.
Also there is an online version of it here that you can look at for free: http://webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en

The navionics map has some
The navionics map has some good comments indicating the channel to follow out from the marina to the 3 mile. You really need to know where you are going out there as there is some pretty shallow reef about. Cheers. Westy

To get through the reef -
Just line up the lighthouse with the tower on the hill, they are there for a reason!!
Reverse cycle a/c supply and install - Ducted and wall splits

You also need to be aware of
You also need to be aware of the shallow reef around the marina, such as wanneroo reef which isn't marked with navigation markers. Easy to see after the sun is well above the horizon, but may be more difficult at dawn.
If you want to go outside the reef, the safest way is to head south and go around the cardinal markers. Alternatively wait for the rotto ferry and follow that out. :)
