Newbies - Advise for crabbing in Mandurah

Hi Guys!

Im a newbies in this crabbing stuff but really interested in it. I;m planning to do some crabbing next week. Will it be a good time or at least come back home not empty handed?

I just came back from Mandurah Dampier Ave (or something like that) just to check the location. I did spot some blue swimmers near the jetty, but seems like they are still small.

if you guys could give me some advise on where in Mandurah would be the best spot, when to catch, it would be great. I dont have a boat, so Im planning to just scoop net somewhere.

I also heard that there's a spot for crabbing at shark bay, up north. is it a much better place than mandurah? Just wanna know if 7 hours drive from perth is really worth it. Again, if anyone know the best spot in shark bay, please let me know.

Guys, any little detail advise on this will really help.

Thanks!

I wouldn't bother scooping

I wouldn't bother scooping until early December and if the weather stays cold maybe even late december. The only reason for this is the bigger blues tend to stay in the deeper water till the warms up. We have been getting crabs in the nets out deeper in the estaury but I haven't been scopping as yet. Some other places to think about is wanjeep road ( coodanup ), Island point south of the cut, Scenic Drive and around Mandurah Key can also produce.

So many fishing spots. Not enough sickies!!!!!!!

Crabbing in Mandurah

Welcome hvc78.

I used to knock around down that way and always managed a good feed scooping around Dawsville in the weedy patches. I used to tow a coolite box or esky behind me tied to my belt. That freed up the hands. This is all great fun and should result in a nice feed for you.

Sheesh man! You must be hard up for crabs if you need to take a 700km trip to satisfy your passion for these buggers.

Cheers, Vince

Does anyone know if you can get crabs in the Kalgan down in Albany?  I am sure you can but wondered if anyone had done it and where they go?

Honestly mate you would be better off crabbing in the swan at the moment. I went crabbing down at Manduah about 2 weeks ago, to check out numbers and there still all undersize. Also a mate who lives in Yunderup went out friday and caycght bugger all! I would wait till xmas!

Yep agree with Made Mait

Yep agree with Made

Mait till a week or 2 before xmas..

Problem is everyone pillages the crabs now and takes the 'just over size' ones, the few there are, and does not let them grow and go through another malt.

This has happened for a few years now, used to be able to go out a few days before xmas and get a good feed for xmas of big blueys... but now.. not much chance.

Better just wait

I think I'll just follow your  advise to wait till at least end of december for the crabbing. thanks for the advise and the new crab spots! will definetely check them out.

Yeah man, I got this obsession of eating crabs! All of this effortsis purely driven by imagining 10 crabs in chilli sauce.... for myself... yummy...

First Time Result

Sat, 2008-12-13 22:43

Just cameback from Mandurah. Caught 4 crabs with just about right size. None of them are "big". well.. maybe i just didnt see them. but lots of undersized ones. Got all of them by scoop net. I tried drop netting, but seems like no luck with it. or maybe i just did it wrong. Spent about 3 hours there, (dampier ave).

Sorry guys, havent tried the other places, but Im going back there in a couple of weeks, so will definetely try the places you told me.

Im gonna go to wanjeep road coodonup by end of the month. Hopefully the crabs will be all grown up by then. a bit disappointed to drive that far and go home for just 4 crabs, BUT... not bad for a first timer right? or was I really suck ?

oh.. i started scoop net at about 4-5pm till 7pm only. Will I have better luck if i scoop net when it's darker? or.. do you think it;s gonna be just the same?

 Thanks guys.
