night diving

being as I have never dived for crays in the south , what is more productive diving for crays night or day diving , up in the NW we always found it was better to dive at night when chasing crays ( I don't rate NW crays as good as crays down here though)

plus perfect time for shark feeding I think same rules apply for dive as does lifting your pots not allowed during the hours of 730 pm to 430 am summer and 600pm-600am winter on page 4 of the leaflet

it apples statewide, page 2 of current rock lobster guide.  If that has been a rule in the past up north, not sure but down here it has been as long as I can remember and I have been diving for cray since 91.

Been advised by a mate who dives that the reason for this rule is because the crays come out of their hidey holes at night to feed and march between reefs and then head back into safety on sunrise. Apparently easy pickings for those willing to break the law, not worth it imo, the penalties aren't worth a feed of cray when you can catch them during the day

Night cray diving ceased being legal around 1990

Mon, 2013-11-25 22:33

Got my dive ticket in 1990 and at that time it was legal to get crays at night but rules changed shortly afterwards. My recollection was a lot of pot pilfering was happening at night and it was one of the reasons why catching crays between dusk and dawn was banned.
