Non Slip Deck Paint - advice needed

Have had carpet in the boat for a number of years but looking at painting deck with non slip paint instead .
Did this once before but found the paint texture with aggregate to be a bit hard on the feet.
This time I was thinking of a softer rubber type paint. Googled Kiwi Grip that I can get from whitworths or Tredgrip that I don't know where to get from.
Both of these are a form of soft rubber type waterbased paint for easy application .
Has anyone used these products or could recommend any other paint?
Not sure what the Cray boats use but something similar could do the job .
Paint is going on a Fibreglass deck .
Cheers
Paul

I am not entirely sure where you would get it

But what about something similar to the rubber base matting often installed at kids playgrounds?

At least that way it is weather proof, soft under feet and non slip

pros and cons for the rubber type paint

Tue, 2016-03-29 18:06

I have used it on ali pro boats, very grippy but will wear out. And then you have the problem of removing the old stuff to re surface. All the rubber based stuff I've seen is an absolute bastard to get off, it just clogs any kind of abrasive wheel you use on it and burns.  When I bought my current glass boat it just had the old speckled flowcoat , very slippery with fish slime and they had removable carpet over it. I hate loose carpet on boats, and fixed carpet glued down isn't much better. it hold the moisture on the surface and accelerates deterioration of the deck, stinks up really easily unless you are anal about cleanliness and use a wet vacuum and detergent to clean it properly a couple of times a year. Been there, done that.

I ground the deck back a bit and re did with flowcoat and sand. I can hear the howls from here already, " too hard on the feet"--not if you do it right. I've certainly seen some surfaces done like that you could use to scale fish with   but it doesn't have to be that way.   I rolled on a good layer of flowcoat and hand scattered coarse beach sand. This is the hardest part, getting the spread right and even. Once the first layer has set, sweep off anything loose and apply another layer of flowcoat with a roller.  This will take the real sharpness off it but still retain the good nonslip characteristics.  Mine is totally non slip, even with mackerel slime and blood, but you can go barefoot for days and not feel tender. Plus it looks nicer than carpet, washes down easily, and will last for a very long time.

Only down side to the tread

Only down side to the tread grip it doesnt like fuel spilt on it. But according to the guys that sell it you can just paint over problem areas if there are any.

Some good suggestions . Had thought about the flowcoat and sand but wasn't sure how rough it would be

May have to do a test patch to get an idea .

If you are wanting an even distribution of grit sand or glass

Tue, 2016-03-29 20:36

put it into a large salt shaker to dispense as needed. When I helped Bodie reprint the floor on his boat and add some very fine crushed glass particles to the paint, the best method for even distribution of the grit was by using a salt shaker.

Hope this helps

Search up non-slip on

Wed, 2016-03-30 10:56

Search up non-slip on windsurf boards.

Windsurf boards have a good grip which lasts for years, gives great grip barefooted or with boots, without taking skin off (unless you go sliding on it).

It is also relatively easy to re-apply and there are some guide as to how rough or smooth you want it done.

Basically, have a cliean surface, masked off.  Sponge roll on a light layer of UV proof  (Boat Cote) 2 part epoxy, then sprinkle on one of the following:

- Castor Sugar for a softer feeling / Normal sugar for rougher / Table Salt for the tough boys / Rock salt if you'll only ever wear boots.

Then wash off the above substance with the hose and it will leave you with an enamel surface with the right amount of craters to create a non slip surface.

Google U-Pol Raptor Liner.

Sat, 2016-04-23 08:22

Google U-Pol Raptor Liner. Its available through S&S Industries in Midvale and is tintable. Ive sprayed a black kit in the tub of my Jeep wrangler and its hardtop. Ive now brought a couple of tintable kits to do my 7.5m ali deck, topsides, fordeck and hardtop roof.

Its a great product.
