north mole update and a question about saragosa's
Submitted by scottland on Mon, 2011-05-02 20:50
hey crew
after finally finishing moving house went down to north mole not much happening only one herring. guy next to us caught a nice sized garfish. just after it went dark my brothers mate caught a port jackson about 30 cm. called it quits and started chatting to a bloke who owns a tackle store. i questioned him about a saragosa 5000 and he told me to steer clear as they are prone to "basically falling apart" has anyone heard anything about this problem? as i was about to buy one
cheers scott

Gotta agree, a mate of mine has put his 18000 through hell and back with very little maintenance and always stood up to the job. Havent owned one myself but from what I have seen its a solid reel. Dont know about the 5000 though

Own a Saragosa 4000....
Had nothing but problems with it.
Already on my third spool in 8 months after the supposed super "titanium" or whatever coating around the lip of the spool started to discolour and then pit really badly. It turn this acted like sandpaper on my braid which had to be replaced.
And it wasn't due to lack of cleaning or maintenance, all of my reels are kept in mint condition, it was just what Shimano called "a faulty batch". Also had numerous clickers break on me, which is just annoying when you pay so much for a reel. It has also been out of action for 3-4 months whilst i waited for Shimano to replace the faulty spool.
Wouldn't touch another one with a bargepole, and in saying that, probably wouldn't buy another reel off of a company that states that having a "repairable clicker" is a feature............ How about a reel where the clicker doesn't break in the first place?!?!?!?!?!?
Anyway, rant over, buy a Luvias dude, I did and it S%$t's on a gosa.

I have a saragosa 5000 and i cannot fault it. solid reel with a waterproof drag.
I have put it through hell both surf fishing and jigging and the only thing was a drag clicker going and this was a user error. Took 4 seconds to replace.
Funnily said it is my only shimano in a mix of daiwa's and i wouldnt part with it.
go for it dude.

Im with the positives here
I have 5 gosas. Had 6. I have the 4000, 2 x 5000, 1 8000 and a 14000. Another 4000 got donated to Huey. Why would I persist with these if they arent as solid as a rock. And the only reason I didnt get Stella's is because I beat the living crap out of my reels.
When they arrived first I was a Spheros owner (still have a couple but dont use them) and was advised that these where an upgraded version. Yeh right I thought but I got the Mrs the 8000 for her MMesh and she has beat the living crap out off all sort of BB fish with that combo (basically skull drags things away from sharks). I was impressed with the reel the rare time I got my hands on it to unsnag etc, and hence the arsenal. It is by no means a Stella, Saltiga or Van Staal but IMO its the best work horse reels I have owned over 35yrs of fishing (apart from the Alutechnos but thats another story and different reel).

Neels
PS the side plates do fall off but some TLC and a good glue fixes that problem. I think WD40 and CRC "melts" the glue.

gosa 6000been nothing but a
gosa 6000
been nothing but a great solid reel , esp with the carbontex upgrade
daiwa salesman for sure
(watched a couple of month old seagate break in front of me on weekend tho , on nothing spectacular )
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

I'd have to concur with
I'd have to concur with Honsu, reels dont fall apart, people make them break. My Dad had one, idiot locks the drag up on a 12kg Dhuie, on a reel with 12kg of drag, What does the fish do? Of course it pulls through and all the gears are stripped, I was waiting for it. It wouldn't have mattered if it was a Daiwa or a Shimano, mind you he just put a clunk in an Exceler DA 6500 (brand new, doing the same thing) on a 3.5m shark.
Idiot.
