not much on the bite offshore today??

I'm keen to know people's opinions on why they think today might have been difficult fishing.

I'm keeping a history of past trips out and am getting some data together.

It seemed like a good day today looking at the numbers.

Black day in almanac, we fished during 2 tide changes co-inciding with moon below bite times. southerly wind at 15-20.

We could see good fish returns ,  and hold  and fish over them.

Very difficult day though with nothing but a baldie to show for it amongst a few shit fish.

The three things I question are

2 days before full has not worked in the past.

Steady trend in air pressure

Fished the 2 mid tide changes between High and low proper.

Any idea's?

Mate it a mystery!

Sun, 2013-02-24 21:14

We had a similar day, saw fish, couldnt persuade them to bite on Placcies and Jigs. i reckon the moon is a factor, for me, big building moon close to full often means quiet fishing.

But when you work it out, let me know please!!

Looking at my past fishing

Sun, 2013-02-24 23:02

Looking at my past fishing records i have actually had all my best days fishing out bottom bouncing/jigging for Dhuis, and Landbased night fishing within 4 or 5 days before or after a full moon. Never on the full moon though for some reason.

Even all the Dhuis i have seen caught from the shore at night have come from this same period, including the one i caught.

I actually plan all my Landbased night fishing sessions to coincide within a few the nights before or after a full moon.

Maybe the Cyclone brewing up north could be putting fish off perhaps???

slow

Slow day up here on Saturday, found some hard core sounder porn that would make most a little chubbed, drop on it, get a fish off straight away then whole thing would shut down and you'd need to find something else.  Really wierd day and had to work hard for a feed.

Full moon and three days after

Mon, 2013-02-25 08:30

I similarly track this and find all of my best catches are on full moon or immediately after (max three days) - didn't get out at the weekend so cannot comment

Yup, I struggled all day

Yup, I struggled all day Sunday. The one baitfish school I saw was hanging real low. Birds were quiet, spots showed fish, but nothing on jigs/placcies. Trolled the water to foam with only one strike.

Moon Phases for April

Mon, 2013-02-25 10:27

Hi guys.  I've booked a charter with Whitey for Saturday 6th April.  Checked the moon phase for that day and it reads

" Waning Crescent. Visible 17%. Age: 26 days"

It may seem like a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway.  Is this a likely lunar situation for success or will it just be a pleasant day on the water?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Cheers

Barry

 Don't let the moon phase

Mon, 2013-02-25 12:39

Don't let the moon phase worry you mate! Whitty is a great skipper and will put you onto fish! If no one ever caught anything decent on a full moon then we would all know about it by now.

Well the solunar tables indicate only an average day 6/4

Still not entirely convinced they work though - again something I am logging / noting and comparing with actual fishing results

Wifey and I headed out from

Mon, 2013-02-25 12:37

Wifey and I headed out from Point Peron yesterday out to FFB. The swell and seas made it bloody uncomfortable. While we sat at Coventry learning the wave pattern we notice a really big bait ball right on the edge of the reef but wasnt comfortable getting close to it. We trawled a Hamma around without any interest, then drifted with weighted mulies, plastics and jiggs with no luck.

After a few nervous burps, we headed to Orizaba and found a burley trail from a boat 400m south east of us, with a few birds aruond, and some big bait balls.

Unfortunately wifey decided she needed to pee and as the boat was drifting (Centre console, so it cant move while she is using the bucket), there was a splash nn the water, and three/five fish in a school swam past the back of the boat, around 10 away. They almost looked like Salmon.

What followed was an arguement about how she cant pee under pressure.

Post pee, we trawled around a bit more with a Scorpion (sp?) but didnt get anything to wake up.

We headed into Garden Island but the seabreeze was in by then and after nearly coming arse up on a rock that rapidly appeared between swells (lurched boat into reverse, stalled it, then drifted over on the crest of a swell), we headed into the sound to see if anything was interested but without any luck.

Headed into the ramp, once again convinced that Fish now understand what hooks are and avoid them.

I'm not a fan of full

Mon, 2013-02-25 14:08

I'm not a fan of full moons... night fishing ok. New moons, good.

In my experience with bottom fishing, I find the sunlight has a negative effect... especially the waters we fish here off Perth (20-45m)... sun penetrates the water column big time.

Dawn & dusk is best...

My best days have always come from overcast days.

Need a new decky ;) ?
