not recommended in shipping channels

these guys didnt look where they were going, and had already turned around when I took this pic.
It looks alot further away than it was
They didnt see the ship until the horn was blown and boy did they move pretty fast when they looked around the sail.
Ship still doing about 6 knots or so

But I thought
Power gives way to sail that's how it goes. Doesn't it.
Hey buddy when your 80K tons and in a channel you are not going to give way to anything full stop. LOL

bit of a misconception,
bit of a misconception, perpetuated often by those sailing unfortunately-only in certain circumstances.
Restricted by draught or limited manoeverability (towing etc) has precedence over everything other than anchored (not allowed in a shipping channel anyway) and aground.
Commercial fishing (gear extending from vessel) also.
In this case they just didnt look!

Pretty sure that "Might has
Pretty sure that "Might has Right" over "power gives way to sail"
Gotta be a fair degree of self preservation on the water.

Rightfully so, the yacht skipper was found guilty of a plethora of charges.

na the "might is right" one
na the "might is right" one is only for sensible people but not in Colregs at all.
In open water a sailing dinghy is standon vessel over a supertanker but smart people would just stay clear.
Of the vessels moving in the water restricted by draft or manoeverability pretty much has it. Under pilotage may cover this also.

And another little
And another little understood fact is that yachts under sail give way to power when overtaking. So when you see the 14' skiffs or sports boats coming up behind you at a rate of knots under spinnaker and barely under control, make them go around you..... and then listen for the abuse, hey paul ;)
(Although it is nice manners to keep out of their way if they're racing).

Thats funny how the brain works. Even though it would truely be a 7.5m long dhue I never noticed it, and even when posted still missed it, as the brain just kept saying "well thats about right for a decent Dhue" Now get closer to 1m.
