Not sure if I've just made a mistake.

Hi guys just booked my 2 stroke yammy in for a service at a local boat yard it's a 2002 model and straight away was told that they don't normally work on motors that old so I asked if his staff were capable of working on those motors he said yes then really tried to put me off with time frame and cost which with the way things are at the moment seemed normal to me. Motor has only 270 hrs on it just stalls every now and then at idle not regularly. I'm a little worried that his staff are only capable of dropping and replacing oil not the rest of the process.

I'm not an expert on
I'm not an expert on outboards but am a diesel fitter. Just keep an eye on the invoice as there's not alot to a 2 stroke service.plugs, fuel filters maybe carbs sync and tune, gearbox oil, water pump check.these don't normally take too long unless there's a problem wich they should contact you before anymore work is undertaken

Choose carefully
Definately ring around, choose very carefully.
In short , i took my 1992 70HP evinrude to a local "mechanic" for a routine service before cray season.
The motor was running fine , never missed a beat in all the years i owned it.
After the service, it never ran again, The "mechanic" had no idea , and so i found out ,, he is well known in the industry as having a 'substance' abuse problem.
I ended up having to take the business owner to court to get my money back.
On a positive, i am now the owner of a brand new 90HP Yammy -- halved my fuel consumption :)

Got out this morning and
Got out this morning and removed fuel bowl all clean in there. I have only owned the boat 12 months I have definitely Improved the stalling problem, downloaded the manual and checked measurements on rod lengths which some were definitely out putting everything where it should have been. Today in the driveway actually dropped motor to where I would have it in the water did adjust revs up to 900-1000, up 100 from where I was and motor didn't stall ran for 10 mins. Think I will still get service done somewhere but I think I will cancel the booking I made yesterday and go somewhere else. Will definitely have a crack at doing it myself in the future.

Yammy expert
I have had my 2004 yammy serviced by Phil Sommerville (& his son) and it has never missed a beat.
Phil comes to you, if he has retired his son will have taken over, both fantastic.

Geeezus, run a bloody mile,
Geeezus, run a bloody mile, he is feeding you a bullshit story and doesn't want the work, a 2 banger would have to be the most uncomplicated , anyone can do it type of maintenance motor going around.

Similar experience
I had a similar experience with a marine mech. Dropped boat off to be told once an outboard motor is 10 years old needs to be scrapped and replaced and was not sorth fixing, a point i argued vigourously on a 12 year old 75 2 stroke that had done 300hrs. Then spent 45 mins trying to sell me a new Tohatsu 4 stroke. Possible substance issue here too as was clearly off his chops when i arrived.
Anyway, long story short, I was due to head away and didn't have time to fiond another mech at short notice so he did the service. When i picked it up he told me it was good as new and should get plenty more years out of it.
Suffice to say i have not returned to his quality establishment.
