Nothing but cold in Cockburn Sound last night

Decided to put the boat in last night and have a cruise around Cockburn Sound with a mate to see if we could find some pinkies that people say are there. We launched the boat at 5pm at the small Palm Beach boat ramp and noticed that in the shallows off to the side of the small jetty there was two nice snapper frames sitting in the water perfectly filleted. This immediately had my mate forgetting his launching duties and he was straight into rigging his rods for the snapper we were soon to be catching.  FAIL..... we motored around the sound, we anchored up here and there, we burlied up, we prayed to the fishing gods and all for nothing of any merit. We caught 1 x banjo, 1 x Port Jackson, 1 x small whiting, 1 x chopper tailor, and approx 20 small picker wrasse looking things. To top things off a full corona fell over on my dash and poured its contents over my new phone.

This was my fish snapper fishing trip so I guess it was a case of more homework required for the next trip. Some days you win and some days you don't...

No good mate, spilling beer is a sin, hope your phone survived at least.

only thing i can suggest, and

only thing i can suggest, and you may already do it.

find a lump, anchor up current, burley like hell, have a floating bait out, and fish light or plastics while waiting for the big one, and don't move spots.  sometimes it takes a while for the big ones to come out and take a look at what's going on.

better luck next time!

Thu, 2013-06-27 14:10

good that you got out there rigpig giving it a go, looks like nice nights all through the week - im keen to get out and give a night fish a go.

i think justo is on the right track - hit a nice looking spot and anchor, waste a block of mulies and lanch some torpedos into the water.

Thanks for the info on what

Thu, 2013-06-27 15:22

Thanks for the info on what to do with my phone and beer, nice work.
I have already put your thoughts into action. Today I have ordered a couple of drink holders that have a foam insert and the swivel in every direction - beer bins...
The phone now has a dedicated Tupperware container.
And after getting my daughters hairdryer onto it it has almost come good with only a weird spontaneous outburst coming from it!!!! Samsung Galaxy 4 - nice phone but not Corona proof....

Take the phone apart as much

Thu, 2013-06-27 15:42

Take the phone apart as much as you can (battery, card, cover etc) & chuck it in a container of dry rice for a day or two. That will soak up the moisture inside it & it should be ok after that.

Definitely outside

Thu, 2013-06-27 22:55

There are a few sparse snapper in the sound if you know where to look but have to agree with Reece , better off this early in the season to fish the ground just outside garden and Carnac island. Find some good ground preferably with some activity showing on the sounder but not at absolute must, burley constantly but not to much or you will be catching rays and port jacksons all night. I've found new moon  to be the best, the smaller the moon the better. Persist it took me about 6-8 trips years back to land my first snapper but as you learn your catches will definitely improve . Sunset and change of tide are two more key factors. Float out 2-3 unweighted baits in the burley trail and fish something light while you wait if you want, have caught big king george , size dhuefish, and big skippy this way .I normally prefer to just kick back and slurp on a coldie, Last thing keep your baits fresh  check every 15 minutes or so ,hope this helps

Hey Dirt, mate thanks very much for your input and I will definately give it a go, hopefully Saturday or Sunday evening. I have a few days owing from work so I think I'll just get out on the water and cruise around and find some spots to try out at a later date. Again, cheers for the info, very much appreciated.

 hoookt, good to hear mate,

Fri, 2013-06-28 11:25

hoookt, good to hear mate, that sounds promising if I keep at it I may do all right after all. My trip out the other night was my first night venture, so based on your effort I hopefully only have two to go . I've had my boat a couple of months but don"t get out as much as I would like, it is a trailcraft profish 510 so it is open to the elements but a solid fishing platform so I should be right chasing the snapper.

Keep up the good work..

I agree with Dirt

Fri, 2013-06-28 20:23

Sunset and change of tide are the key factors. Between the islands is worth a go.

If you can fish a high tide just on or after sunset you will do ok sooner or later.

And keep it quite helps like don't drop things on the deck snapper can be spooky.

I remember fishing nearly every week in a boat that would slap in the chop as it came through. A lite ally flatish bottom. Nearly every other bugger caught fish but not us.

Good luck rigpig

Also agree with Dirt.

Sat, 2013-06-29 14:18

Dirt and I have spent quite a few hours chasing pinkies and this time of year out between the islands is definitely the go, change of light rising and high tide and lead up to the new moon phase and after seem to work very well the darker the better result, and there also needs to be some structure around, don't really know about the noise from the boat we normally have the sterio on and my boat is a 6.5 metre ally which slaps abit in the chop, I think it's more a case of not having to much terminal gear clanging away on the end of your line keep it simple two 5.0 or 6.0 hooks snelled to a 60lb leader around 80cm long to a swivel then the main line alway's works for us and if needed use a small ball sinker on the leader to drop the bait if the in coming current is keeping the bait up a bit to high in the water. But I prefer to use no weight when possible, don't over berly as Dirt said you'll bring in the rays and banjos keep your bait fresh and you should have some success, good luck.

Cheers

Paul.

 Dirt and Paul, could you

Sun, 2013-06-30 08:27

Dirt and Paul, could you please elaborate what you meant between the islands? Not coordinates (though you're welcome to pm them ;) but which islands. How far out. How deep. Thanks

Islands

Sun, 2013-06-30 08:43

Grumpy smurf, the islands I refer to are garden and Carnac islands, just inside, between and extending a long way past has lots of very productive ground. Just sound around and look for some structure and then follow the rest of the recommendation in this post , all the best

P.s depth doesn't really matter, we have caught them in water depths ranging from 5 mtrs - 15 mtrs

Easy to find the spot, head

Sun, 2013-06-30 11:05

Easy to find the spot, head out like we did last night and look for the boat car park :)

Also my first time out last night with some mixed success, got monstered by a couple of huge something's early in the session, lost a heap of gear weighted and unweighted to the bottom as there wasn't a lot of drift. When I did get some baits in the midwater thick herring made short work of them.

We stayed out til late and although no snapper we did pull a nice break sea and a banded cod type. Got almost us much fun out of watching a family with young kids next to us having a ball with herring.

Nice pull on your first trip Marko, arsey bugger :)

 We dropped some frames there

Fri, 2013-07-05 17:00

We dropped some frames there last week ;-) when we come back in, it wasnt snapper frames, u sure they was snapper? We dropped like 3 or 4 filleted frames right at the side of the jetty ;-)
