The official footy thread for 2011!!
Submitted by PattyT on Sun, 2011-03-20 17:15
I had a look to see if someone had started a similar thread but couldnt find anything... so here it is!!
I have really missed footy this off season and I cant wait for it to start. In my opinion its Collingwoods to lose, but there will be alot of interesting things to unfold this yr as per usual. As a Bombers supporter im pretty excited to see how we'll go, cant see us winning to many in the first five though.
My top 8
Collingwood (Premiers)
Hawthorn
St kilda
Bulldogs
Geelong
Fremantle
Carlton
Adelaide
Goddard is a star and my favourite player in the afl, I can see him winning the brownlow this yr.
Love to talk footy and here some of my fellow fishwrecked members views on the upcoming season
NOT LONG TO GO!!
GO DONS!

Got a question for
Got a question for everyone
What do you think of the sportsbet advertising during the games telecasted on TV this year?
Personally think its a bad image the AFL shouldnt be apart of, especially given the recent news articles of players being involved in betting scandals. They no longer allow Alcahol or cigerette advertising, am surprised about the sportsbet.
Whats everyones views?

in the last 5 minutes of the pies swans game you could still back the swans at 99 to 1, we are all responsable for our selves but I think its over the top

Loser
Makes you wonder when the Geelong / Essendon game was on when the commentators said there was a punter with a million bucks on Geelong to win. He may have invested heavily on earlier games through the season but eventually you are going to lose. You never see a bookie driving round in a broken down rust bucket

Great point mate. There are no sure things in footy, as was proven on the weekend. The only thing I bet on is multi's on the brownlow.. guessing the top poller for each club is the only thing I get right year round. Can make some good coin off it.

So whats everyone predictions for Friday nights game, Eagles V Cats.
Am top of the ladder in the work footy comp, but not sure if i shoiuld risk picking the eagles to beat the cats. Eventho i think they stand a real chance in doing so.
Whats everyones opinions, who will win?
Lynch is scrubbed out for 1 round, which is a huge loss i rekon. Been a good lead up half forward all year, taking plenty of marks.

I think the eagles are a massive chance, but i dont know if i wanna risk tipping them. I'm coming second with 91 at my league at work so i might play it safe with the cats for now... hmmm. Decisions. Few hard games to pick this weekend..

Playing it safe by picking the Cats???
I reckon you'd be playing it safe by picking the Eagles. It is at Subi you know! Plus no Ablett, no Selwood, no Mooney, no Mackie, coming off a loss... And the Eagles are firing. I'd be worried about picking Geelong.

Sorry Wazzabat
but if you had a look at the fixtures you would've seen we've got the Lions at Aurora. I'll be horrified if we lost that. Then yeah, a bye next week.
We have a 'realtively' easy run home (similar to WCE) so should both end up with around 14-15 wins, it will be interesting to see where we end up.
Good home win last night WCE

Yeah, but
our chances come September have alot to do with who we get back on the park.
Stratton, Gilham and Roughhead wont be back but if we can strengthen our mid/back line we should have a reasonable chance against most sides.
It's been good to see that we can still get solid wins with half a team of kids, bodes well for the future.

Just got home from the bombers match... Heath Hocking will win mark of the year, HUGE HANGER!! Dont have any idea how they are officiating holding the ball these days... no one had any idea what was going on tonight, both players and fans. Good win in the end.
As far as west coast go i was really impressed.. On the sport radio stations in melb i always hear other afl coaches saying the eagles press is the best in the league, up there with collingwoods. I would agree with that after seeing last nights game.. so much pressure!! Would not wanna meet them in the finals thats for sure.
For eagles supporters out there, what are ur thoughts on Nicoski? Still up in the air on him.

I reckon Nicoski has been pretty handy up forward this year. Thought he was gone last year but not so now. He kicked one of the goals of the year Friday night. I'd be leaving him in the team for now for sure.
Didn't get a chance to watch the Bombers game but I did see a half time score and was pretty happy cause I picked the Tigers. Must have been a pretty one sided game in the second half? Must have been a good mark to be better than Peterd's and Nic Nat's marks?

Yeh Nicoskis goal will go
Yeh Nicoskis goal will go very close. The tigers just packed up shop about half way through the third term (22pts up), I think Essendon kicked the last ten! As far as Hockings mark I might be a little bias but it was huge, and in the context of the game it was even bigger. It was when we were three points up I think and he took it in the goal square.
For all those dreamteamers/supercoach.. spewing about ablett!!! 2-3 weeks the reckon.

there was a reason i didnt include Ablett in my side this year. i knerw because he would have a bigger workload that something would happen sooner or later..... picked up Liam Sheils instead.... for about $300,000 less ;)

WCE need to finish 3rd.Then
WCE need to finish 3rd.
Then it will be a quarter against Geelong. Would make an interesting game, but would be dependant on where it's played.
Only 2 teams i can see in with a chance of beating WCE is Stkilda this weekend, and the bulldogs (bulldogs have a point to prove, and have quite a few back from injury). Plus its in Melbourne!
I predict the dockers getting a thumping the weekend after next!

It pains me to say
that I think WCE are a good chance for the top 4. Carlton and Geelong have died in the arse although it's not the worst time to have a form slump. My boys (Hawks) have a bye next week but looking at the remaining fixtures and getting some good players back from injury should get at least 3/4 wins in the run home.
It will be interesting to see if WCE can maintain there form or fall to bits with injury or tiredness. There next 3 weeks could be tricky with St Kilda running into some form, who knows which Freo side will turn up then WB who have also found some form. That being said I can see them winning at least 4 from here putting them in the mix of the top 4 if not 3rd.
When it's all said and done I can't really see anyone beating Collingwood atm. It was only a month ago that they flogged WCE by 9 goals and gee they dispatched North without even breaking a sweat.

yeah i agree, collingwood are out on their own at the moment. I dont think anyone can touch them
However as you said it, if they run into some injuries, could change the dynamics of their game.
the next 3 weeks for WCE will determine where they finish. If they win all 3, they will finish 3rd.

Agree with matty, Collingwood are out on there own at the moment! I dont think Geelong can match it with them with only Podsiadly up front, carlton have to many players that go missing in big games and have similar problems up forward. Hawks have to many injuries, roughead is a massive loss! And west coast are just a few years early for collingwood at the moment. Hopefully it evens up somehow.

Seriously guys. Your all taking the piss out of the Eagles efforts and blaming the draw and draft pics bla bla. FFS we have knocked off 2 of the top sides (one on their home turf). Let's face it guys, the Eagles have sored again this year thanks to some great support from the management team and the ongoing dedication of the support base. Things can only get better regardless of what happens from here.
Tell me any one side in the comp that would welcome an Eagles home final? (apart from the Eagles of course LOL).
