The official footy thread for 2011!!

I had a look to see if someone had started a similar thread but couldnt find anything... so here it is!!

I have really missed footy this off season and I cant wait for it to start. In my opinion its Collingwoods to lose, but there will be alot of interesting things to unfold this yr as per usual. As a Bombers supporter im pretty excited to see how we'll go, cant see us winning to many in the first five though.

My top 8

Collingwood (Premiers)

Hawthorn

St kilda

Bulldogs

Geelong

Fremantle

Carlton

Adelaide

Goddard is a star and my favourite player in the afl, I can see him winning the brownlow this yr.

Love to talk footy and here some of my fellow fishwrecked members views on the upcoming season

Sun, 2011-03-20 18:22

Goddard is one of the dirtiest mongrels on the ground. I was at a Saints / Freo game last year at the Docklands and he kicked a goal low and hard into the Freo cheer squad behind the goals and hit a young boy clean in the face and knocked him out, he saw what happened, had a laugh and went back to the centre. It was totally un called for. I made a formal complaint to the Saints and they followed it up apparently, but I dont know of the outcome.

Goddard hasn't had the best

Sun, 2011-03-20 19:39

Goddard hasn't had the best pre season but I've still got him in my DT.  I think the Saints will slide a bit this year.  Still not sure whether the Eagles can climb a bit.  I think Freo will slide a bit too.  GC will struggle to win a game.  Unfortunately Collingwood will be hard to beat again this year.  Their list just goes too deep.  Geelong will still be hanging around the top too.  I've never picked a top 8 and I'm a shocker at tipping but here goes.

My Top 8

Collingwood

Geelong

Hawthorn

Western Bulldogs

St Kilda

Essendon

Melbourne

Sydney

if my Hawks are a little more convincing this season and have shaken the rediculous premiership hangover they've had for the last 2 seasons.

I will take the time to remind all WCE fans that it IS possible to finish lower on the ladder this season and your odds on favourites to do so

Sun, 2011-03-20 21:45

It pays to remember---there is no prize for finishing second through to second last, only the top and bottom teams receive a trophy and the bottom one's doesn't come from the AFL. It will never be found in their silverware cabinet---only in everybodies memory bank!!! for a loooooooong time plus the records books.

was good to see them play in a slightly different style. A few of the young fella's like Savage, Suckling and Smith are developing nicely. Along with the old boys, Hodge,Mitchell and co. there not a bad side. Shame there was only 2 blokes on the park over 6'3"

Could've been a scary scoreboard if they had of taken it seriously for more than a Half.

Having said that we'll probably get smashed by the 'woods next week.

Dockers are miles from a top

Sun, 2011-07-03 08:46

Dockers are miles from a top 4 chance, sorry mate, I dont think they ever were. Honestly I cant see who the eagles are going to knock out of the current top 4, unless it is carltank (possible  with their draw but unlikely IMHO). Personally I think other then this week the hawks have a reasonably easy ride home, and I think they could win this weeks game too :S

However I think everyone that loves footy will agree Fyfe is a great lill player to watch, silky smooth skills and the kid is like a bulldog on the ball, for someone his size he just doesnt seem to care about getting hurt, he is in there and trying all the time. I watch Freo play just so that I can see him ripping into the opposition.

Have a look in the Sport

Have a look in the Sport Confidential in the back section of this mornings rag, they have analysed the draw this year and it's very obvious and it was also the outcome of the analysis that Wet Toast have had a very cruisey draw all year that has helped their turnaround. There, it's official.

Cheers

Well,

Sun, 2011-07-03 11:52

this is obvious.

It's all got to do with 'winning' the wooden spoon. You get high draft picks and an 'easy' draw the following season.

Same every year.

Sun, 2011-07-03 12:19

Yeah because every wooden spooner turns it around the following year due to those high draft picks (of course GC didn't take the majority of them) & an easy draw. You two need to remove those eye patches, credit were it's due to WC

This rule obviously doesn't

Sun, 2011-07-03 17:23

This rule obviously doesn't apply to Collingwood who finished top last year and still get a "cruisey" draw.  How many times have they travelled out of melbourne this year again?  Oh that's right once.  And by the way, how many more times do they have to travel this year?  Only 3 more times.  That makes 4 for the year right?  Rigged!!!

And Hawks only leave Melbourne 5 times for the year (not including Tassie games which is where they choose to play anyway).

Eagles have it cruisey my arse!

Collingwood don't make the rules or the draw for the year , the AFL does and if they want to have their big money earner in Melbourne then  they are not going to complain. If it was the Weegirls you wouldn't complain either.

You're right.  If West Coast only had to play 4 games away from Perth every year I wouldn't complain.  We wouldn't have finished bottom last year if that was the case I reckon.  But they don't and Collingwood do so I will complain and stir the pot as much as possible.

I'm not sure

Sun, 2011-07-03 19:07

about the Hawks draw, there's only 7 interstate teams anyway. I'm sure it will be different next year with an extra interstate team coming in.

But the Collingwood thing is purely financial on the AFL part, not rigged. They have the largest membership base of any AFL club @70,000 therefore the AFL always tries to fixture the pies at the largest grounds the most number of times.

The 'fairness' of there draw has been raised many times in the past any will be raised many times again. nothing will change. Eddy holds alot of power in Melb so the powers that be always seem to listen to him. It's all about blockbuster matches ie. Collingwood/Essendon, Richmond/ Carlton, Carlton/Collingwood etc. and then the Derby's in the various states. Bums on seats = $$$. The AFL is all about $$$ now days, not fairness.

I'm not having a go at the Eagles at all when i say they have a 'easier' draw. It's how the AFL structure the following years fixtures. You win the wooden spoon you get a slightly easier draw to 'help' develop you players. It's been the same every year since the AFL's inception, not sure if it will change with the 2 extra teams coming in. This year has been a little different with the Eagles developing very quickly with a near full strength side each week and becoming a good side ahead of schedule.

TBH I don't mind it, there's a few more 'happy' faces around town.

One of the incentives of finishing in the bottom 6 is you get to play the bottom 6 twice the following year.

Oh well,

Sun, 2011-07-03 13:15

looks like we're gonna get smashed by Collingwood. Lack of height and a few holes in the mid feild being exposed in a BIG way.

Nah mate,

Sun, 2011-07-03 20:17

have a look at the time. Was posted about half way through the 2nd term. We were getting smashed and I had pretty much given up hope. Looks like the 2nd half wasn't so bad? I didn't end up seeing it, too busy chasing a little white ball around.

Been going at about 50% so far sea kem, boys will start to ramp it up in the run to September. Top spot is up for grabs now that the Cats have stumbled. Perfect world would see Pies finish top and have the Eagles finish fourth, so we get them first week of the finals in Melbourne.

Much rather play an interstate team in a home final wazzbat, every little bit helps.

Confidence

Like you confidence (blind faith) boys, lets see if you can seal your part by finishing fourth.

Eagles have had a good season so far, if they did finish in the four it would be a great result for them.
