The official footy thread for 2011!!

I had a look to see if someone had started a similar thread but couldnt find anything... so here it is!!

I have really missed footy this off season and I cant wait for it to start. In my opinion its Collingwoods to lose, but there will be alot of interesting things to unfold this yr as per usual. As a Bombers supporter im pretty excited to see how we'll go, cant see us winning to many in the first five though.

My top 8

Collingwood (Premiers)

Hawthorn

St kilda

Bulldogs

Geelong

Fremantle

Carlton

Adelaide

Goddard is a star and my favourite player in the afl, I can see him winning the brownlow this yr.

Love to talk footy and here some of my fellow fishwrecked members views on the upcoming season

NOT LONG TO GO!!

Massive game

Mon, 2011-08-15 14:47

I'm a Blues fan so looking forward to it although I can't see us handling Buddy, Cyril and the like down forward. (Should get 8-10+ between them)

Especially after a 6 day break and travelling back from over here. While the Hawks ran around some witches hats.

I think it could be close but Hawks should get up by under 4 goals. If the Blues sneak this one they play Saints in Round 24 to see if they make top 4 or not. If we lose this we will finish 5th and probably play Sydney.

Where's all the Shockers fans

Mon, 2011-08-15 20:05

Where's all the Shockers fans gone???  What - Just because you are below the Eagles on the ladder still?

I wonder what the stats are on how many weeks in total, since the Shockers have entered the comp, that the Eagles have been above them on the ladder?  I'm guessing it would be similar to the same lopsided stat which shows the difference in finals appearances, Brownlow votes, etc etc.

They really are dissapointing.

cant see the eagles losing a game for the rest of the year.

Bombers at home, Brisbane in Brisbane, Crows at home.

Carlton have the bye to come, WCE will finish 4th if they win all 3 regardless of if Carlton beat hawthorn

Agree Bodie

Eagles almost certain top 4. Will depend if Carlton can sneak the Hawks game and Saints game. Then WB have to beat Hawks and Carlton can get top 4 but not looking likely. Should finish:

Collingwood

Geelong

Hawthorn

WCE

Carlton

Saints

Essendon

Sydney/Freo/North Melb

If you have a spare 5 mins you can play around with the live ladder and come to your own top 4/8

Petterd didn't report it, the umpire overheard it and decided to report it himself. The reporting of it to the AFL had nothing to do with Petterd at all.

The quarter and three quarter breaks will soon be extended to give the players a bit more time to redo their makeup.  It's all a sign of the times unfortunately.  We are breeding a generation of soft cocks.  jmo.

On another forum I was reading recently that in NZ school age club rugby scores were now to be halted (the game continues but the score is frozen) when one team gets 35 points in front of the other.  This is to ensure the loosing team didn't feel to bad and get depressed. FFS.

In light of some recent one sided AFL matches perhaps this approach has a place AFL too.

You obviously haven't seen the footage Matt?  He definately "dobbed" to the umpire after the arguement with McGinnity.  And then to make things worse, he pursued it instead of dismissing it when approached by the AFL.  The guy should be banned from playing AFL again.  Or made to wear nappies in place of footy shorts.

This is the biggest joke of the AFL this year - Apart from Freo that is!

Eade will coach again I reckon, everyone over here says Adelaide but I think Melbourne would be stupid not to chase him hard. I think he could turn there list around pretty quickly, bulldogs should of kept him in my opinion. In regards to Mcginity, he over stepped the line and probably should have got a punch in the face... but it should of stayed on the field, its now turned into a circus.

He's been there long enough which means he would've played a part in choosing them there cattle though wouldn't he???

I don't think it's the cattle anyway.  I reckon they have a pretty good list.  Boyd, Cross, Ward, Cooney, Higgins, Griffen, Hall, Gian, Morris, Murphy.  They are some pretty big names.  I think the dogs have under achieved.  Especially this year.  In saying that though, the opposition has been pretty darn good for the last few years ie) Pies and Cats.

But still, I think he is over rated.  I wouldn't cahse him if I was at Melbourne.  Still hasn't won a premiership?

Yes. Great to see them string together a solid second half

Sat, 2011-08-20 18:23

This was make or break and a great result. Carlton have a shit draw and I can't see them regaining 4th place. It seems as the 8 is now pretty much done and dusted. Home final coming up touch wood. It's murder at the Docklands at the moment so Freo don't have a lot to cellebrate for end of year. I wounder if their supporters will finally succumb and cheer the Eagles on...... I doubt it....

Yep, you got at least 1 thing right there Vince. The only thing Freo have failed to learn, is if you tank it, it can get the 5th best pick in an already compromised draft, and a super cruisy draw through the following season, sound familiar?

Sun, 2011-08-21 16:08

C'mon Dale Freo should'nt need to be tanking By rights they should bloody well be at third or fourth and you should be still laughing at us still struggling. They have a  major fundamental thing missing at the Dorkers and it's called winning. Vince is spot on with what he says below. The squad hasn't changed that much to last years they have actually learned to take instructions and play like a team. Freo were a rabble last night and should be ashamed of themselves. The Pav must be spewing he decided to stay out his career there.

No tanking down Freo way at

Sun, 2011-08-21 21:33

No tanking down Freo way at all, what I was alluding to was that if you done what egirls did last year, you would get a good draft pick and a cruisy next season, something which has already been said about egirls by the Sunday Times a cuppla weeks back, but I understand if your blue and yellow glasses are too tight for you guys to see the fine print. And yes, Freo are a rabble just now. I'm totally disgusted by their effort yesterday, I wont deny that. Our season is done and dusted and I hope santa buys them all a nice big heart each for xmas, and someone belts the laziness out of them over the pre season. Get them all fit and ready to go, and hopefully a season without too many injuries, there I said it, and we''l see what transpires next year.

Thanks Sea-kem, it took a while to get going this thread! Now its going along nicely.

Was a good game yesterday (Bombers V West). Bombers had a solid crack but the better team was always going to win, really looking forward to seeing how the eagles go in the finals. I think a prelim is a really big chance, I would have to say that they are probabaly my second fav team to wacth at the moment. Getting sick of essendon getting all the injuries in big games though. Its happend 4 times this year, all in really big games.

A good showing in a prelim at the G for the Eagles will be a nice result for the season IMO. Beating either of Geelong, Collingwood or the Hawks over there will be a massive ask, but going on the boys efforts at least we know they will have a red hot dip.

It would be interesting to see who we follow??

Mon, 2011-08-22 13:08

Love the bantering about footy. Just like V8's, but in that game there is only 2 teams.

I am a very Pro-WA person. I love nothing than seeing a WA victory in any sport etc. IMO it is simple. Like them both, but Eagles first, and has been since day dot. Rugby based background, but as all contact games are just that, watch anything that has that. Not then a fan of Soccer.

As a X State rugger player got asked yrs ago to teach some tackling to a few of Swan District player, and sort of befriended the Narkle boys, Leon Baker and Mike Richardson during that time. Todd was that way. Try anything that could possibly make the boys play better, and living almost next door to Bill Skwirowski (pasted, cant spell that for nuts) Todd asked me to show some tackling. (tried it on Ron Boucher and bounced back!!!!)

When the eagles joined with some of the players involved I supported the Eagles. Prior to this was Essendon.

If it was Freo I would have supported them.

Now its fun to bag each team, but its WA I support. Would love to see the Dockers break the hoodoo and get a flag. Only team from non-Victoria (apart from GCS obviously) that havent done it yet, and by god they have had the time.

There has to be something amiss with them after this period of time if not only havent they done that, but frankly they havent even come close.

Just from a passion point off view there IS something wrong there. Just when they look like there might be hope, it crashes down. I had them in the top 4, now I dont see 8 (sorry). Its like panic instead of plan to achieve. You cant be numero uno instantly, and Freo just seem to try magic fixes rather than hard yards. The Eagles just have this "whatever" that works, and even though I had them at about 10 at the start of the year, Im not surprised at all at their posy. Had them at 5 next yr, and Freo at 2-3 with aiming at a GF.

Plans will obviously change, but we have a 5yr bet in the family each yr, and each year it changes.

There is a trust with the eagles, and even though I like the Docker's there is none. You couldnt bet on where they would finish, but with the Eagles you can predict whether they are rebuilding, or coming down. Next year they will be there or abouts and a serious final hope (I predicted that in 3yrs). As for the Docker's, who the hell knows what they will do, but unlike the eagles they will start panicking as always, sack the coach and start with no structure again.

IMO Melbourne is more structured than the Dockers. You cant always be at the top, but you have to have a plan to try and get there, and thats where the dockers rate as immature as a club.

I just hope they get this, because if they keep going the way they are, then I might rate an eastern states club above them (god forbid), and even Dale above might change has favourite. How much can a poor Docker supporter bear???

Sorry about the rant, but I do like the Dockers and wonder how or what they have to do.

But there would be heaps off true coaches that have input there, and still they havent got an act together. Go back to the old colours, might get a bit of Italian passion going.

Interesting???

Mon, 2011-08-22 16:59

I'd be interested to see if Freo can actually field a side. They have 17 players on their injury list and only 2 of them are possible starters.

Perfect for the Magpies with their small but growing list of injuries to rest a few and take it easy.

After friday nights close win against Carlton hopefully my Hawks get through unscathed against WB. We're only just starting to get a few back without some more falling over now.

Not very often for the Dockers that's for sure

Mon, 2011-08-22 20:34

And in the case of the Eagles it's a matter of looking where we have been recently and a club knowing where they can get to again with commitment. As the press elude to the 4th spot is now ours to lose and I would be really disappointed if we blew that chance. I don't think that will happen given the draw.

If all goes well then we have a home final and I think any team would consider that a tough task. A second chance in the finals can be really helpful as all teams will not "tank" as some will in the next couple of games. Given the Dockers reports I think Mick Malthouse would be tempted to start on the wing LOL. Maybe it would have been better for the Dockers if they had a bye this week.. and the next LOL (with some form of respect LOL).

Pies won't rest too many

Mon, 2011-08-22 20:18

Pies won't rest too many against the Dockers I reckon.  Think they would rather pump the Dockers with a full squad then rest a few against the Cats, knowing they have already secured top spot.  They're less likely to get injuries against a piss poor Dockers side than a hard at it Cats side???

Either way, they will need to rest players in one of the games at least because they won't get a week off in the finals after losing to the Eagles!!!

Not sure wazzbat

Mon, 2011-08-22 20:52

I believe that its so much easier cutting yourself with a blunt knife than a sharp one. What that means is that when you dont play to your maximum ability is when you get injuries. If you dont go in hard you get hurt. I would rather rest players than go in soft.

I think Malthouse might just be starting to shake a little in his boots. I dont hope they scare the Cats or Pies, I think they will. Hawks and Eagles just peaking at the right time. Hate Hawks though, just above Magpies in the 4 day old fish stench department.

Didn't mean they wouldn't go

Wed, 2011-08-24 05:16

Didn't mean they wouldn't go hard Crasny.  Just meant I think they will rest players for the Geelong game - not the Freo game.  They will go hard in both games but they won't have as good a side for the Geelong game.  At least, that's what I'd be doing.  It will give a few of the "fringe" players a last chance to prove themselves for a finals appearance and a chance for their better players to have a rest before the first final????   Just a thought?

West Coast have locked up 4th

Sun, 2011-08-28 06:53

West Coast have locked up 4th spot!  Oh Yeah!  And Freo has dissapointed it's supporters miserably once again.  Though, they should be used to it by now.

Did anyone get some pennies on Sydney this week?  I couldn't resist those odds and thankfully chucked 10 bucks on them to win back 92.  Pity I didn't have a bit more money in my wallet at the time.  I still can't work out how Geelong were so short???

Sun, 2011-08-28 07:21

a little bit concerned wazzabat with they way that WCE had trouble dealing with Brisbane. For WCE's sake I would hope it was just an off game before the finals.

Personally far more impressed with the way my Hawks disposed of WB. Still playing good footy with a list of injuries in key positions. Hawks actually have a chance of finishing 2nd. Next week if Collingwood beat Geelong by a few and Hawks smash GC by enough (80+ I think) Hawks will sneak into 2nd by %. Hopefully we don't run out of steam early in the finals.

Well done on the bet though mate, nice little earner

The Eags got caught with their pants down early but showed they can run out a game. It was fairly appalling weather up there as well so probably slowed things down a bit.Great game for Masten.

Sad Wankers

Mon, 2011-08-29 11:18

We really do have some on here. Best thing the Dorkers followers can do now is contemplate what comes next in 2012 and not come here and denegrate a side which has shown great reslove and progression for all the money they pay their executive team. Acheivement for value? Is that what the Dorkers fans expect or do they just accept the fact that the club will never really achieve anything with the way it's run and supported. Poor form you sad sack fucks.

Collllllllllllllingwooooooooooooodddddddd!

We'll rip your inexperienced young boys a new poo shoot in two weeks time, you know it deep down, I just know it. WCE have had a great season though considering where they finished last year.

I predict you'll win the second week and come up short in the prelim against Geelong/Hawthorn. Good building block for 2012.

Mon, 2011-08-29 11:54

I tend to agree that the Collingwood game is going to be a huge task but I will not write the Eagles off. How can I? I have a passion for the club. A home final in Perth will be a big test for any side. We have beaten Geelong here already and the Hawks are beatable. As I have said before I am proud of what has happened in the club this year regardless of what happens now. I just hope we don't get 2 pasteings in a row LOL.

Wooden Spooners???  I'm

Mon, 2011-08-29 05:46

Wooden Spooners???  I'm pretty sure West Coast are sitting 4th.  Think you will find the shockers a lot closer to last spot than the Eagles.

I remember all the comments last year from Shockers supporters which went something like "You WCE supporters are living in the past.  Get over it.  Freo are on top of WCE this year"  Well - I hope they enjoyed it cause WCE are back on top of the poor old Shockers once again!

Oh - the dissapointment a Freo supporter must feel year after year still the only team without a premiership (other than GC obviously.  But my bet is they win one before Shockers)?

Brisbane are a much better

Sun, 2011-08-28 21:40

Brisbane are a much better side than people give them credit for... even though a top side should put them away. Remember how long it took the pies to put them away last weekend. Pies V Hawks grand final for me... boy will that be a cracker!!

As far a my bombers go.. GOD!!!! That was a tedious 3 and half quarters today, was at the game and you could see they didnt want to get hurt and get the hard ball. Then they decided to and kicked 7 in about 10 minutes... gonna have to improve to get near Carlton.

I agree with you Patty.  I was almost gonna chuck a buck or two on the Lions?  Glad I didn't though.  I think Brisbane will finish in the 8 next year.  They have a lot of gun young players now.  Redden, Rocklift, Polec, Karnezis, Rich, Hanley  along with Adcock, Black,  and Luenberger firing.  They still get back Merrit and Brown next year too.  They'll go alright!

I listened to the last qtr of the Bombers game.  Can't believe they got up?  Hope they flog Carlton!
