Oil leaks out of reservior
Submitted by Toby Roe on Mon, 2012-01-23 11:28
Hi All,
I have a 2004 125hp Mercury saltwater series motor with the oil tank under the cowling. Unfortunately, if the tank is more than 1/2 full the oil comes out of the reservoir cap when I trim up but the cap does not look damaged at all. Has anybody else had this problem and what did you do to fix it?
Cheers

Cap
Try adjusting the cap they work on O ring compression so as you tighten it they commpress if it does not screw tight it will leak there is an adjusting nut in middle of cap

I compressed the O-Ring as
I compressed the O-Ring as much as possible yesterday arvo but found I was still having the same problem so I had a closer look at the top of the reservior itself. It looks like the cap is a cam lock arrangement (as opposed to threaded) and that the plastic on mine is worn. Oh well, I will call the Merc dealer today to quote a replacement but given what I was charged for the pinch weld between the upper and lower cowlings I may have to put up with the green stains in the engine well.
Cheers
