Oil for older car

Hey peeps

my old girl is just about to clock 300000 kms it's a 1999 Toyota Hilux Ln 167 turbo diesel, I am going to lucky bay for Easter, just wanting thoughts on what oil I should use now on an older vehicle to keep her going good for a bit longer 15-40 is what I usually run but any info or thoughts are most welcome cheers.

It’s her special day

Give her a drink of the best stuff you can afford. I’m using Delo in my 92 75 series Ute and my 06 Sahara . Both cars love it and it’s getting changed every 10000 k . You might want to pop for a new diesel filter and an air filter too. Give her a shot of injector cleaner in her  tank . Treat em well and they’ll ( hopefully ! ) look after you ...:)

Delo gold (or that’s what it used to be called) is a good all round engine oil. It’s also 15w40 viscosity as per what you have been running in the past. I wouldn’t go any thicker because you have the turbo model helix engine, and you need a reasonable flow rate of the oil in and also out of the turbo. Start to go to thick with the oil and you could see turbo bearing problems.

Also good advice above about new filters and a good shot of injector cleaner. Those ln167 turbo diesels can start to “breathe” a bit when then get to 300,000klms +. If it is using a bit of oil between oil changes and has a leaking rear main seal, that’s a classic sign for the crankcase being pressurised by blow bye, and it will  also push that crankcase gas into the intake etc etc. if so, it might pay to put an oil catch can / breather setup on the crankcase ventilation hoses. Will stop run on (because the oil vapor acts as a fuel) and will aid in the reduction of oil consumption.

Cheers

Delo 400

Wed, 2019-02-27 15:43

I use Delo 400 in my Hilux turbo diesel.  I did a lot of research on oils when I first bought the vehicle and Delo 400 kept coming up in the recommendations.  I change the oil every 10,000km.  I had the EGR bypassed a while ago while having some other work done and the mechanics said it was one of the cleanest heads / rockers they had seen on a vehicle that has now done 240,000km so I can only say I am happy with Delo 400. I buy mine in 20L drums from the Caltex servo on cnr of Fenton & Kewdale Rds in Kewdale. I dont know if they do Delo Gold as I have never looked for it.

 Delo 400.
Find a Castrol depot, $110 for a 20L which is about the same as the crap from retail shops anyway.

 I have previously got Delo

I have previously got Delo 400 from the Caltex in Kewdale, and also Supercheap in Mandurah when they had a huge sale early last year. Supercheap branch has to be a "super or mega?" store to stock Delo apparently, Midland, Mandurah, and maybe Malaga or there abouts I was told. Bought 5 drums at 25% off, so set for a while.
