Some very nice Blue Eye there

I've never caught one of those oil fish but they have a reputation of being decidedly unfriendly when near or on a boat though attached to a heavy set line they are probably subdued a little easier.

Yeah those oil fish are a serious piece of work. Theyve got blade like scales that are sharp as all over their body. Pretty sure this one didn't have much fight left after being pulled up from the very deep.

Brings back memories, we got 8 ton of Trevalla, Hapuka and dog shark off a seamount in 1000mtrs once. Used 80 hook drop lines with 20 floats and radio beacon. Had 12 sets and took 20hrs to check and re-deploy them all.

yep over east half way

Sun, 2011-04-03 18:54

yep over east half way between NZ and Aus, the skipper was later charged for fishing in a no go zone and selling some of the catch labelled as Barramundi....i was young and stupid and only did the one trip, the boat and skipper are well known for raping and pillaging and not paying the deckies, would not suprise me if the skipper dissapeared at sea......by accident of course.

Have to admit defeat on that one, haven't done too much of the deep deep water stuff but will see if I can track it down.

The shark is a False Catshark Pseudotriakis microdon.  That is very interesting to see it from Albany - thanks for sharing!

and it's hard to tell from the photo, but are you sure the one you called 'Bass groper?' is not a big Hapuku.  Bass Groper should have white tips on the tail IIRC

i feel seasick just looking out the back of the boat ;-)

you might be correct - it is hard to tell with certainty from the pics.  The smaller ones are definately hapuku.  I agree that the big ones are much heavy in the body and it doesn't look like the lower jaw sticks out as far either.  Either way mate - I love the pics.  very interesting to me.  I'm guessing a couple of hundred metres?  I'm sure you picked up all sorts of other interesting stuff too.
