One of my little secrets is out..

Well guys i couldnt resist it any longer.

I fished in a location most of you all will laugh but i hooked a ripper!!!! Im keen on feed back and what you all think about it.

Story goes i was photographing the old abandoned powerstation in south fremantle

As i was walking past the water in the front of the powerstation , the bit where the water used to run out to the ocean. I saw a big splash and  saw some fish swimming around. Similar to big herring. May have been mullet.

Seeing as though the place has been abandoned since the 60's i started to wonder if there were any MONSTER fish still swimming around untouched from fishermen. The water goes right back under the building so anything could be there..

I didnt even bother taking pictures anymore i was so keen on getting my fishing gear but it was 5pm n a sunday and i live in morley ( too far away)

I decided that the next weeked i would head there and give it a crack.

The next week seemed like an eternity but finally the saturday came and i was off down there armed with a pack of prawns. I found a nice safe spot and cast. Straight away i got a couple bites then bang! Hooked up to a fish. Got it in and it was a baby black bream. Really silver in colour though . Very surprising to get one here.

What happend next is beyond belief. I put a bigger hook on and found the biggest prawn in the pack and cast it out unweighted and waited. All of a sudden i was hooked up to something massive!!!! It went left  right and came up to the surface and i know its hard to believe but it looked like a bream about 6-9 kg!!! Yes it  been a snapper?

Then it shot towards the underneath of the  powerstation before it snapped me off under the pylons. After that i never hooked it again. Only small black bream. I kept it really hush hoping i would snare the big one again. I have been back even with mulies but no luck.

One local said to me that there are black bream in there up to 5 kgs but no ones hooked one yet.

I tasted the water and its pretty fresh, just a hint of salt.

I will post the pics of the bream when i get home and of the bit where i was fishing....

Lake Clifton was and is full of a genetically different yet still Black bream, ie a subspecies. Because the word got out about the size of them people abused it and treatened the stock. Now it is illegal to fish there, and walking out on the jetty there you can sometimes see some whoppers.

I actually thought you beat me to it. When my post loaded it sat below yours, and I went oH well, at least I got the lake right. I was wondering whether it was lake preston, but I know there is Bream in all the lakes in that area.

When I first got a BabyVib, I took off the little hooks, tied it to a line and tested the action of the jetty in lake Clifton to figure out which of the attaching holes on the top had the best action, or the one I liked. The blade was smashed 3 times by a beasty bream or 3. So I stuck with the spot the lure was tied on then.

Had no idea where you were talkin about so had to google map it.

From a dinghy in the ocean, Ben has landed some cracker fish including bream, just undersize pinkies, tarwhine, flatties, kgw, leatherjackets etc from all the rockwalls/pylons around the area. Im down that way from time to time also and would be keen to have a crack.

I used to sneak in there sometimes while my grandfather fished for tailor along the outside. Sounds exactly the same. I used to catch heaps of small bream (maybe a little bigger) and then the odd monumental bust off. Never had a hit on the heavy handline though.

Sorry

Thu, 2011-05-19 20:50

Sorry guys , i dont want to put a downer on this thead, but i used to destroy toxic waste at a plant in W.A. And this site was our biggest client.

The water around and in front of the power plant was used to dump PCB oil and their containers before legislation was put in place to stop this.

Even to enter this place we would have to wear full chemical suits and full face mask's.

I would not eat or even touch anything at this place. It is fenced of for a reason, PCB's are very toxic and can cause cancer.

I am not trying to cause trouble, but couldn't let you guy's go in there without saying nothing about this place.

The power plant is still standing because it is too toxic to remove, all the land and beach around it is still contaminated.

If i am wrong please correct me. This is only my opinion from experiance of the site.

In the long run Davy_G the whole area is polluted. Why do you think when they dredge the near Freo warf the Gov posts reports not to eat fish from the river.

Its no secret, there were signs for many years around Googee saying not to eat seafood from this area.

The whole ocean is poluted one way or another, I still eat fish, crabs, squid etc. I just avoid high risk areas like the power station.

wow is that so , i never knew that , i only thought the reason they didnt remove it was due to it being like a heritage building ! did they ever release any information on this ? the dumping of the toxic chemicals that is really bad. also are those chemicals not toxic to fish as the bream are able to live in there with no issues ?.  its good that you have said something a fair few people might ahve gone down this way. maybe a sign the bream are so huge.

I can get in the sh#t for posting this , but is true. When it hapened tho, it was not illegal to do this. It was a long time ago but what i know about these products it takes a few decades to dissapate into the enviroment. It still does not go away, just thins out and spreads further.

I wasn't going to comment but had to. After working with this stuff and many other chemicals, sadly i realized they are everywere. There are many sites around the country that are just as bad or worse.

Thu, 2011-05-19 21:42

There was a cartoon in the west australian about the PCBs there, back in the 80's. A couple people were passing a beach fisho standing in the water, and asked him if the fish were ok to eat. He was replying that they were fine, but below the waterline, his feet were about the size of a car.

The PCBs there, not really a secret ;)

I wouldnt eat the fish for sure

Fri, 2011-05-20 08:03

But fishing there for fun and sports outside the fence is fine. And Marc, the chance of harm from tasting the water would be infinitely small, so dont stress. As I recall this was shut 30odd yrs ago, and the chemical would have dessipated to a safer level by now from environmental contact, but they do get concentrated up the food chain, much the same as mercury and cadmium does in fish on top of the food chain in the sea. Poor old Dolphins a prime example.

But to go there and try and get that monster whatever it was for a photo and lenght, wt. No problems. Checked with a eminent toxocologist in Perth. Uni mate off mine. Just dont eat it.

It will be only a matter of time before some greedy developer gets the nod to knock it down and start building mansions. Cart the contaminated soil and waste to some country area like they did with Buckland Hill and some parts of Minum Cove. That whole stretch of coast from South Beach to Coogee has had all sorts of chemicals leached into the ground for decades. Wheres the EPA ? Government departments regulating Gov`t land.

Do a google Earth on the Kwinana and Anketell areas, and see holding ponds that don`t leak Spearwood and Mandogalup were our prime produce growing areas, industries are getting to close for my liking now.

They did tests on the water

They did tests on the water there a while back and they say its contaminated from the asbestos in the powerhouse. So eating the fishing from that water might not be such a great idea.
