One step forward two steps back for Geograph bay.

Heard that a scallop trawler has been allowed back into the bay and is also allowed to trawl for whiting. After a win with the seine net fishing it seem a backwards step to allow a trawler to start back up again. Anyone that has dived the four mile in the bay would have seen the destruction these guys did in the past. Areas that would of once been large areas of coral gardens are now just flattened out bits of rubble. I am no expert on the matter but to me and a lot of the locals I have talked to can't believe this would be allowed to happen again.

Absolute disgrace.

Is the trawler operating on a Commonwealth license or a State license. I have been told that the 2 net boats that occassionally operate in the bay and on the 4 mile are allowed as they have Commonwealth licenses.

Doesn't really make sense

Doesn't really make sense does it Seaquest, i thought fisheries would have stood firm on the matter as you dont have to be a rocket scientist to know what commercial trawler's do to the ocean especially in a confined space

I haven't heard of this but will keep an eye out. I usually go down the beach every morning I'm home to read the paper and I get the binoculars out for a look but haven't seen much of late.

Cheers

not good news at all . trawlers mean the destruction of the ground all types of fish and other marine creatures use for shelter. hope they come to their senses and change their minds about this one

have heard some conflictin

Mon, 2010-08-09 20:33

have heard some conflicting stuff on this................

it may very well not be a trawler at all .........it seems kailis have in the last 3-4 months  embarked on a shift away from just the commercial fishing scene ...........into commercial offshore oil and exploration support and servicing ...................although the add and the set up may  fit a trawler , it may also be for the offshore set up and service  to the  desal plant in the bunners area .........

trying to get some more info to confirm that is the case .......

cheers hezzy
