opinions on 4.8ltr patrol wanted

hi guys

some of you now i chasing a v8 cruiser 2002 onwards, but i am stuggling to find one in my price range, so im

looking at another option...the 4.8ltr 2004 patrol, i dont want to know about the 3.0l as that is not an option, but if you have first hand knollege of the patrol would be great to hear, good and bad, especially in the towing side of things.

must be auto and $25k max

thanks in advance

ron

Thirsty on fuel if it is

Thirsty on fuel if it is going to be your daily driver. If mostly for a towing rig they are a machine.

Buy a diesel. I work in the industry.  You will struggle to sell and get stung for resale on any petrol 4x4

2005 onwards the patrol 3L turbo diesel is good.  The 2.5L pathfinder is better again. Especially if going auto.

We have a Patrol on site. It

Thu, 2011-11-03 18:57

We have a Patrol on site. It has done a gear box, a clutch, cam shaft the brake are pooooo, speed wobbles pretty bad over 80. It is used off road 99% of the time but so are our landcruisers which have done more then triple the amount of k's on the clock. The Patrol has just clicked over 100k, the worst part id the way Nissan have dealt with the situation. Bought from brand new Nissan still wont cover anything because we use it off road (helloooooooo!), we have sent it to Perth and Kalgoorlie for repairs and both times the car has come back with exactly the same issue turn up a week after getting it back. We now work on the piece of crap our selves and touch wood its been running for about 3 months.

They do have some get up of the mark which is the only good thing i can think of.

Stay away from Patrols is my advice. Have you looked at Land rover?

serously mate, im in my truck all day every day and im sick of chaning gears.

i want a bit of comfort as well now, my days of bush bashing my 4b has gone and it would be a nice drive along a beach to a fishing spot in comfort...with a jimmy in the other hand!!!

edit: would love a v8 diesel but they want anther $10k for them, so stuck with petrol.

Traded my 06 Patrol4.8L on a 06 4.2 intercooled

Thu, 2011-11-03 20:10

Traded my 06 patrol 4.8l on a 06 4.2 intercooled turbo diesel , used the 4.8 for 3 years towed race a car all round Oz, and my boat around the West coast, never had a prob, plenty of power , and basically got thrassed for 3 years, the only killer is the fuel bill.

More and more people every day are swinging towards the Nissans , its Diesel for me ( maybe that should have said Turbo Diesel for me )

Two mates have them and there

Thu, 2011-11-03 20:50

Two mates have them and there nice 4x4s. Drove one to exxy towing the boat fully loaded 2T + and did it with ease.

To compare l have a early 100 series 4.5ltr and the 4.8ltr patrol gets heaps better fuel economy than my cruiser around town.

You should get a good a 2003/04 for that money.

I have a 4.5  99 gu driven

Thu, 2011-11-03 21:23

I have a 4.5  99 gu driven daily from quinns to the city and give it hell heaps of grunt cost me a 100 a week for fuel certainly is thirsty compared to my old cruiser. Would recommend a manual though some times wish i had a auto in the traffic chaos. pulls a 7 metre rig like a freight train and for the 9 grand i paid can not go wrong i believe the 4.8 are slightly more thirsty. Keep the revs under 2200 and the tank certainly lasts a bit longer i don,t run gas as i have heard good and bad reports and performance is stronger on the petrol any how.Their are some good Patrol foruns with lots of useful info worth a look.

Ti , Are you sure

Fri, 2011-11-04 06:58

Ti ??????? Are you sure you want all those electrics along with them leather seats, go the ST or even better the DX as it has bugger all electrics, even has manual windows, cant beat them, im using a 4.2 Ron and do Coral bay every year towing the southwind filled with 2 weeks of (mainly crap the wife wants to take ) plus the essentials chest freezer etc. sits on the speed limit easily the hole trip at 2100rpm @100kph, and shits on my mates 100 series as well as a new troopie for fuel econamy, but at the end of the day you will never beat a steel block and head engine ( ie the 4.2)

Best of luck Ron and do a bit of Research, your a petrol head im sure you know what i mean, Redbook has some good info

Mate has a 4.8L (01 I think)

Fri, 2011-11-04 05:36

Mate has a 4.8L (01 I think) and loves it.  I have a 4.5L (98) and would happily own either rig.  If you aren't driving it every day and don't care to much about the fuel bill then I say - Go for it.  From what I have seen/read, the 4.5 and 4.8 engines are pretty solid and you shouldn't have too many problem with it.

Can get lots more power out

Fri, 2011-11-04 07:04

Can get lots more power out of them as well. Add a big turbo. Go and have a look at YouTube. Search patrol vs lambo. Those middle east guys love them.
