Opinions on new Evinrude G2
Submitted by bigedd on Wed, 2016-04-06 07:42
Hi there looking at getting a new wellcraft centre console and knitting it out with the new G2 from Evinrude. I've always had 4 strokes but the reviews on the new G2 look impressive. Anyone out there own one or have mates that own one ? Are they happy with the product ??

Apparently twin 350 g2 use
Apparently twin 350 g2 use less fuel than my single 300 yammy so maybe they are good on fuel but have a chat to some of the service guys that work on them..

I have it from a reliable source that the new G2's are pretty good, much better than the old etecs. Fuel economy is meant to be excellent and hole shot will no doubt be very good.

early days yet
can't say I would buy anything that wasn't tried and tested, the old high horsepower etecs had a lot of problems with injectors.
Everybody is moving away from 2 strokes so resale down the track might be not so good, but they do look like something out of Transformers if you like that

evinrude have always had the best promotional campaigns and sponsership deals. Most of its bull shit.
I like how they were saying how they had so much more power then a foustroke because the etec had twice as many powerstrokes compared to a fourstoke lol what a joke.
Best would be to talk to a un bias boat mechanic, eg one who is not a dealer

Powerstrokes

Well, actually they do, for a given rpm. An actual power (ignition ) stroke every two strokes of the piston, vs every four strokes of the piston for four strokes. The fact you are getting an actual power stroke twice as often is why the design has been around for so long, and the inefficiencies caused by the piston-port type induction has been addressed by rotary valve induction, reed valves, and now, the injection systems which are all derived from Ralph Sarich's original rotary engine system. And two strokes don't have to be a petrol/oil mix sparked by a plug, ever heard of a GM diesel? (older type ) screamin' jimmies? Two stroke diesels have been around for a VERY long time.
And no, I am not a fan or otherwise of Etecs, justpointing out a basic mechanical fact.

Earplugs
Lol JF... that's a classic. Went to Gerro from Busselton and back on a long weekend for a hockey tournament over 30 years back. My butt was numb after 5 mins for a 8 hour trip... had a blast but(t) never again.

Ran a 6V92 for 14 years
In an uninsulated ali hull, no less.. Didn't do my hearing any favours, that's for sure. Also had a small bondwood boat with a 6v53 for a short time, that was a hoot. They certainly had a good displacement/output ratio--they had those little 318 ci ( 6 cylinders @ 53 ci each, for the uninitiated) diesels putting out up to 500hp in turbocharged form, way back.
