Outboard motor flush?
Submitted by West Oz Mark on Tue, 2009-12-29 09:39
I just returned from a trip to Esperance with my tinny where I ventured out several time. I washed the outboard down but as I had no way of flushing the motor I left it until I returned home.
I am looking at taking a trip over East for several weeks with the boat and I would like to know how do I flush the motor when I don't have my wheelie bin?(Not enough room in the camper).
I have a Johnson 8hp outboard but looking upgrading to maybe a 15hp.
Thanks...Mark

flushing when moored?
anyone got ideas for how to flush your motor when it is moored in the water / on the beach for a few weeks??? obviously you cant drag a bucket of freshwater out there, and where we are going to camp wont have any running water...
I imagine the tilting the motor up will let the salt crystals dry up in the gearing and intakes...
or would it be an idea to cover it up with Inox or similair after each use?? and are their portable rinsing units for the intakes??
anyone with advice on this please let me know.

I dont knowwhat its called it on my yamaha on the outside top left there is a bit of pipe with flat end, it unscrews and you can then screw a garden hose on it clip on the attachemnts and flush it out I personally use the muffs though

Flusher
Did 6 months on the road with a tinnie. I rigged up a 2 litre coke bottle to muffs and held it under the tell tale to recirc the water. So only used 2 L of water at a time. Let the first 10 seconds of salt water fall to the ground though. Dead easy and a great way to conserve water.
Worked a treat.
Similiar idea for the Trophy for remote stuff;
I'm sure you could set something up like this scottbec.

thanks Pete
thanks for posting the pic up Pete. It looks like a great idea and being able to reuse most of the water will come in handy, especially when we will be out the middle of nowhere...
I might just flush it after every few trips as I imagine that in the water it might be a bit of a tricky job.

Thanks for that everyone! I
Thanks for that everyone! I was racking my brain to work something out.
I think I might make a setup like Pete D and get rid of the wheely bin that I use at home as well as on the trip.
Thanks again....Mark

To be honest if your using
To be honest if your using the motor than no reason to flush it out. Mainly because you keep turning the water over so salt never really gets time to crystallize.
My 4 hp Yamaha gets flushed once a year in fresh water.
