Outriggers - has anyone made there own

I have a set of rod riggers but was thinking about making outriggers, if it's possible. I know you can buy them but I get a kick out of making things when I can . I can fabricate some bases easily enough but was wondering what to use for the poles . I have access to some 18foot extendable ( telescopic) aluminium poles but they seem a bit flimsy at the tip section . not sure how stiff they need to be . Never been on a boat with outriggers so not sure what they should be like . If anyone has had a go at making there own I would appreciate any tips or ideas .
Thanks
Paul

Pakula website has a couple of tutorials as to what makes a good outrigger set up.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Thanks dodgy .
I have been on the Pakula web site and it gives some good info on setting up outriggers , tag lines etc but not on what to build them out of.

I saw some in Kota Kinabalu (northern borneo)a few yrs ago that were made out of windsurfing masts ! :-)

Do they need flex
I gather you need a bit of flex in the outrigger pole for some reason. Other info on the net suggests too much flex causes the pushers to jump out of the water. ie beach rod blanks are too whippy. Hard to figure out what is the correct flex. I supose thats why you pay for all the reaserch and developement that goes into making things like this.

I am no expert but think you
I am no expert but think you need a bit to allow for the boat being slowed/sped up by swell and wake -ie so that the lure/bait/plug rungs a little smoother
We have alum rupp riggers (on the boat when we bought it)-and the times we have used them i cant believe how much they bend!

The stiffer they are the better
I would be more concerned about them being too sloppy rather than too stiff. Stiff riggers will give you a much crisper release and increase your hook up ratio.

What about a rod blank as the
What about a rod blank as the pole - just need one long and stiff enough

Thinking 16 to 18 foot
Thinking of 16 to 18 foot poles so not sure i could get rod blanks that size and stiff enough. A 14 foot rod with the last couple of feet cut off may be stiff enough but then too short .

6.5 mtr
6.5 mtr boat with inboard so it creates quite a large wake. Was thinking the longer the outriggers the better to get lures in clean water
