To P or not to P
Evening all , I have narrowed down my next purchase to a Ocea Jigger 5000.The problem being it comes in two versions the 5000P a 4:1 ratio vs the 5000 with a 4.9:1 ratio and I cannot decide which is best for me!!
Although the difference in ratio is small it is quite noticable in line retrieve, the lower ratio is noted for its cranking power ..
Usage will be jigging and baits out in the super deeps. I have used all the popular ratios from 3:1 to the high speed 6:1 but mainly in 120m and down where the faster retrieve is handier for checking baits but with the bit of trade off in cranking power when hooked up, nothing a bit of pump and wind wont fix !!
But with me pushing further and further out to the 300-400m mark its taking for ever to wind up but is obviously easier with the lower ratio....Would there be a noticable difference in cranking power between 4:1 and 4.9:1 ???
And if your wondering yes I have used 2 speeds but haven't found anything I like or within my budget { Talicas haven't been proven yet } ...
One last question has anyone pysically handled the 4000 and 5000 together to see the difference in size, is it just a case of spool depth or is the body/reel bigger. The 5000 holds a fair bit more line especially in the larger breaking strains...
Forgot to mention I'll probably run PE6 or 8 over it in either a good jap braid or Whiplash {for the diameter}.
Thanks to all ....

Have jigged with a 5000
Have jigged with a 5000 4.9:1 in 105m and found the low down torque of the reel was really good.
With a good line retrieval per crank i didnt have much trouble at all getting fish of the bottom.
was a pleasure to jig with...can't say much about the low geared 5000 or the other sizes as i havent used or seen them!
Cheers,

I might be way off base here
but wouldn't it be a little small for jiggin in 300 - 400m if spooled with PE8? PE6 might be better, but if memory serves me you only get like 350 - 400m of PE8 on a 5000OJ?

If you're gonna be fishing
If you're gonna be fishing 300m+ more often I suggest you go 5000 and personally I prefer the lower gear ratio. Ive used the 4000P, awesomely powerful reel. If the 5000 is bigger, it wouldnt be much at all.

id go with the 4.9.1
id go with the 4.9.1 retrieve, 4.1 is just to slow for the wind up, i use a blue heaven L120 for my deepwater jigging which is a 4.9.1 retrieve, i fit about 575mt of pe6 on it, if your jigging your not going to be able to run pe8 in 300-400mt of water because you will just get to much water drag, even with pe6 and 600g jigs i notice the drag on the line.

it all depends on how much
it all depends on how much line is wound on on every turn of the handle, we have a reel that is 3.9 to 1 ratio but it winds on nearly 1mtr of line per crank, imo the lower ratio reel would be better , yes you need to wind up more but on the other hand it will put less strain on your reel and your arms

For your specs, I would say
For your specs, I would say the 5000P. I prefer the 4000 as the 5000 has a larger spool that sits up so it has a tendency to 'roll' more, but you need the capacity. Otherwise there is little difference.
At these depths and weight, you need all the cranking power you can get. This is what the P is for.You may not get a fish every drop, so the extra energy saved using a low-gear while winding up from depth is a great bonus. 300-400m is a long way! What is another couple of minutes if it allows you more energy to fish longer.
PE6 80lb would be the better choice.

Thanks once again to all who
Thanks once again to all who posted some very well thought out comments, going off specs the 5000 holds 550m of PE 6 but your right Huggy PE8 is getting down a bit so depending on brand I might be able to squeeze a bit more on there or perhaps I thought of going down to PE5 but in something like Galis Ultra which stills comes in at 78lb meaning I could possibly go down to the 4000 seeing as Kasey mentioned the size and balance issue which I was aware of in narrow reels hence the reason for asking if anyone had handled them before.
I'm leaning towards the "P" version more so for the power required at these depths on bigger fish and the bonus of less effort required when retrieving between drifts...
Any more comments on the 4000 vs 5000 debate ???????
Cheers .....
