Paid paternity leave

Ive spent the last hour on the phone in queues and being handballed from one department to another, so I thought I would post this up as I would more than likely get more sense here.

Can anyone tell me the current go with paid paternity leave for men.  Do we get it, was it overlooked when the legislation was brought in?, who would know etc?

Im 4 weeks away from the little tacker or tackette arriving and wanted to find out.  Either I need to book in some of this leave or some annual leave.

Can anyone help out at all?

Wouldav thought wageline or fairwork could help you. I just took a week off for the new one, I just took 1 week annual leave.

 pretty sure you would need

pretty sure you would need to be the primary carer to get paternity leave, otherwise you will have to take personal/parental leave (ie sick leave)... do you have a workplace agreement - cos that should have the answer. otherwise fairwork australia would be best to check with (as tim-o said)...

it is up to your employer

As suggested 5 - 10 days paid is normal. Check with them.

The government amounts are if you are the primary carer.

All the best at this exciting time of life!

Does the wife work?

Tue, 2012-08-07 17:58

If so, she takes holidays and carers leave at the birth. You take maternity. She goes back to work and you stay home and look after the child. Im sure your employer has paid maternity leave for the primary care giver in its award. Tell them thats you. If they say your not the mother. Tell them thats sex discrimination.
