Potatoes!

Ok now like a lot of pom's I like my spuds (the eating kind) but lately the only ones that seem to be available are crap for just about everything from roasting to chips even boiling does anybody know what is going on with them? we normaly shop at spud shed but have tried them from woolies and they are worse, I know the potato marketing board control what we can have but it's been like this for weeks now, anybody in the know about spuds

and when were likely to be able to enjoy our chips again!

I've been using Royal Blue

Mon, 2012-08-06 21:11

I've been using Royal Blue but i've bought bags lately where about 1/3rd of them are still very green.

I prefer to grow my own when i can (Delaware and Royal Blue) rather than buying the crap from the supermarkets, need a bit of patience  but well worth it.

Potatoes

Mon, 2012-08-06 21:13

http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/wa-potato-laws-embroiled-in-controversy-20120315-1v7ap.html

Spuds have become a political hot potato in Western Australia as the state opposition seeks to stamp out the nation's last remaining potato regulator.

Arguably an anachronism in today's capitalist world, WA's Potato Marketing Act of 1946 - and its subsequent regulator, the Potato Marketing Corporation of WA - trace their history back to the shortages of the Great Depression and post-war food security.

The corporation not only controls what potato varieties can be grown and sold, but who grows them and how much they are paid.

It has the power to search premises, confiscate equipment and crops, and prosecute farmers - as rebel southwest potato grower Tony Galati has found over the years after being threatened with legal action for overplanting and trying to sell excess spuds cheaply.

Mr Galati finally resorted to moving his thriving Spud Shed business to an industrial area adjoining Perth's Jandakot Airport - because it's on federal government land and not subject to state regulations.

potatos

Tue, 2012-08-07 18:34

well going to the spud shed is probably the first mistake they buy all the S&^T produce at the canningvale markets i see it every day . if its rotten he buys it. most people look at the price and dont think about its a bit old , marked or deformed.

as for potatos in general the extended dry spells we have had in summer and  autumn has affected the potatos purely from lack of water and temperatuers of the soil being raised and ie; the plant being stressed which always alters the tastes and textures of fruit . i would be heading for a ruby lou potato ( red) at the moment i know that there has been a lot of patches which has just been harvested.

To Sleepwithfishes regarding your coments about spud shed...

I doubt you would express your thoughts about Spud shed to Tony direct as I would imagine he would purchase a substantial amount of produce from your floor you work for. Seriously doubt your boss would be happy losing such a customer?

As for cheaper fruit and veg purchased most is used for saturday public market that is used by resturants ect... also gives shit saleman a chance to move unsold stock.

if your in the markets every day come see me at Galati bros in the morn and im more than happy to show you what is purchased for the shops to change your negative attitude

PS potatoes are not a fruit they are a tuber

Happy Fishing

The potatoes we get in WA

Tue, 2012-08-07 19:59

The potatoes we get in WA are a bit of a disappointment ( regardless of where you get them )

After living in Tasmania for a year, I got to see what really good potatoes are all about ..and talk about variety...

Pink eyes , Dutch creams , kenebecs ... The list goes on and on ...
