Parmelia man fined for excess squid in remote WA location

August 9th, 2018, 02:30PM, Written by Gabrielle Jeffery - Weekend Courier NEWS

A PARMELIA man has been fined after bagging more than his fair share of squid at a fishing spot on a remote part of Western Australia’s Gascoyne coast.

Robert William Rowles appeared in Exmouth Magistrates Court on August 7 where he was fined for taking excess squid offshore from Bruboodjoo Point.

Along with another person, 61-year-old Robert William Rowles was fishing from a small boat when Fisheries officers came and inspected his catch.

He presented a catch bag to Fisheries officers that was attached to the boat, which contained 14 squid.

Further investigations resulted in the officers locating a further 30 squid, concealed between two buckets on the boat.

When fishing with two or more people on a vessel, the boat possession limit for squid is 30.

When an individual catches squid the daily bag limit is 15.

Rowles made full admissions to being the master of the boat and knowingly exceeding the boat possession limit.

He was fined $200 and also received an additional mandatory penalty of $529.10 for the excess squid that were seized.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Gascoyne Midwest Compliance Manager Grameme Meinema said the fine should be a significant deterrent.

“Concealment of fish is a serious matter and Fisheries officers are alert to the potential of it every time they inspect a vessel,” he said.

“Fishers in remote areas should never think they will get away with breaking the rules, they need to know the rules wherever they fish and realise that Fisheries officers are there to ensure those rules are not breached.

“We would ask the local community or visitors to an area to maintain vigilance and report suspicious fishing activity along the WA coast, no matter where it is or how remote.

“Don’t get directly involved, but be observant for details that may help an investigation and phone FishWatch on 1800 815 507 to report any suspected illegal fishing.”

A mathematician goes fishing.

By my reakoning he had  his boat  limit 2x 15 for two fishers on board , and then half another overlimit for a boat , or double a limit for one fisher, or

2 fishers had 7.5 squid each over there own limit, but whatever the final tally what he needed all that rubber for is anyones guess!

it's got me beat when i hear about people knowingly taking more than allowed...and then hiding it when busted...

or in this case trying to hide it.

poor form

Fri, 2018-08-10 08:50

He is the CARETAKER of the camping area at Bruboodjoo point.... very, VERY poor form... I could tell you a story or 2 about not only this guy, but a few other old blokes that frequent that area.....

it reflects extremely badly on the grey nomads up in that area, most of which try to do the right thing, but there's always a few bad apples that think no one is watching...

What on earth would you do

Fri, 2018-08-10 15:45

What on earth would you do with 15 squid, let alone 44?

I caught two squid last Sunday night at the Busso Jetty, and that was enough to feed my family (me, missus and two kids).  I just can't imagine why you would ever get to 15, and think "Hey let's catch some more".  If nothing else, you need to clean and store them somehow.

I mean, there's always using them as bait, maybe you'd use a couple for that, but then you've still got 13 to eat...

Baffling.

i can uderstand a miss count

Fri, 2018-08-10 20:28

i can uderstand a miss count on a couple but you cant misscount ones that are hiding.

i knew personally one duo that used to fish same areas as me out of rocko. they caught well over their limit trying to upsize on a club day. on the way in we saw probably about a dozen nice red snapps floating not too far out, we mentioned this to the guys about it , there response was , it was us , we were hoping to see someone on the way in to give them away but saw noone so we threw them over.

hence my opinion of these 2 changed a bit

Gave fishwatch a call on

Tue, 2018-08-28 12:19

Gave fishwatch a call on Saturday whilst up the river. Call back from local fisheries on Sunday and turned up 2 hours later. A couple of unhappy tourists now I suspect as tried to bullshit their way out of the situation. We are over these pricks doing whatever they feel like so hopefully with a lighter wallet they will tell their fellow grey nomads to give them something to think about.
