Paternoster droppers

Just wondering how you tie your paternoster droppers. I've started tying some like in the photo below. Just wondering if anyone else has used the twisted droppers and does it keep its shape while fishing?

Is a twisted 40lb dropper the same as using 80lb singles?

Shorter

Tie them shorter and don't feed your hooks directly on them. Tie you hook to a separate bit of line and do a loop at the other end then feed the dropper loop through the trace loop and then place your hook end through the dropper loop and pull tight.
Doing it that way allows you to replace a hook trace if you get bitten off without having to re do the whole rig.

Thanks, I'll give that a try

Thanks, I'll give that a try as well. I have a bunch of these made up and I use a loop at the top to feed the whole rig onto the swivel. If I get bitten off I can swap the hardware over to a new rig and be back going again in no time. Getting bitten off isn't something I've had to worry about yet fishing metro offshore!

I use twisted droppers for my paternosters when I am using heavier trace, if I want to put a gang hook on it. If I am using lighter gear then I do a normal dropper loop and cut it so I have a single line of mono as the dropper

Good job

We use a lot of the twisted droppers. Important to get a leader material that is not to stiff. A bit shorter as John has said, but look good.

 do mine exactly as Carn.

do mine exactly as Carn. said

Short loop about 50mm tops, then tie hooks with a short (50mm or so) bit of line and a figure 8 knot.

Quick to change hooks droppers etc when out on the water then.

Just slip your hook rig over the loop, short and stiff stops hook tangling in the dropper.

Google

Google how to tie a dropper knot, plenty of twists and grip the loop when you are ready to tighten it with you teeth to stop it sliding out and make sure your tongue doesn't get tangled up in it.

I know how to do the dropper

Sun, 2014-07-27 13:07

I know how to do the dropper loops themselves John it's the twists on the leader section in the pic i'm interested in. I can't see how those twist don't just unfurl? I usually just do a fig 8 knot halfway to keep them stiff.

Like this Andy .. do my whiting rigs up the same way with 3 twisted droppers , less tangles and presents baits better IMO

I like it Chris, but harder

Sun, 2014-07-27 13:20

I like it Chris, but harder I guess with the heavier leader. I use 100lb for bottom bouncing, have you done them with that sort of poundage?

Heavier it is the harder it gets lol .. Haven't got the 100lb but the 80lb Black magic leader is doable

Twisted

What percentage is this knot good for, around 40 or more like 30 percent.

twisted

I use 100lb no probs. two twisted droppers up top, one slightly longer single leader down bottom with snelled hooks.

You can also use shrink wrap

Sun, 2014-07-27 19:29

You can also use shrink wrap or small tube(lumo even) on a normal dropper to get the line to sit more perpendicular.

Try a running sinker set up.

Try a running sinker set up. Out fished a paternoster rig set up on many occasions in 10-50m depths

dropper loop knot strength

Tue, 2014-07-29 14:02

I find the twisted dropper loop knot reduces the line strength significantly, for this reason I prefer to use 3 way swivels

success on the twisted dropper

Tue, 2014-07-29 14:44

Me and a couple of mates had a fair bit of success on the twisted dropper up north, with some fairly heavy duty fish this year. Also managed to get 100lb line into them too, a bit of work I'd imagine but worth it for the presentation. Just glad I wasn't in charge of knot'/rig tieing pre-trip! Agree with Coyote_Dave to, I know a certain "extreme" man who loves his 3 way swivels and they look solid and apparently fish really well. If you've got the time, patience and coin they're probably the end game really.

While its more than likely

While its more than likely that my knot tieing is not up to scratch, in my own rudimentary strength test I couldn't get anywhere near the breaking strain of the leader material using twisted dropper loops
